San Francisco has a subtropical Mediterranean climate, with the world-renowned San Francisco Bay Area, Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman's Wharf. It has a warm winter and cool summer, plenty of sunshine, and is close to many US national parks (such as Yosemite National Park) and Napa Valley, the wine producing area of California. It is known as the "most popular city among Americans". The Spanish discovered this place in 1769 and joined the United States in 1848. In the mid-19th century, San Francisco developed rapidly during the gold rush. Overseas Chinese called it "Gold Mountain". Later, it was renamed "San Francisco" to distinguish it from Melbourne, Australia. As of July 2014, the city's population was about 850,000, of which 180,000 were Chinese. It is one of the areas with the highest Chinese population density in the Western Hemisphere, and the total number of Chinese is second only to New York.
