Starting from Beijing, the high-speed rail goes directly to Datong in two hours. As soon as I got out of the station, I was attracted by the weather here - there was no sticky heat wave, only a refreshing and suitable temperature, and I instantly felt that I had come to the right place!
🌿 Yungang Grottoes: Evening time to avoid crowds
After resting at the hotel on Friday afternoon, I went straight to Yungang Grottoes at 4:30. This time is perfect: there is no need to queue up outside, there are fewer tourists, but the sunlight is still soft, and the light and shadow of the grottoes are beautiful at 5 or 6 o'clock. Although there are a few popular caves with a little more people, the overall visit is very leisurely. The thousand-year-old Buddha statues are more solemn in the sunset, and the heavy sense of history is overwhelming.
🏯 Ancient City Wandering: Shuttle between ancient temples and mythical beasts
On the second day, I slept enough before slowly strolling around the ancient city, and there was more than enough time.
• Shanhua Temple: The grandeur of Liao and Jin architecture, standing in front of the main hall will be inexplicably shocked, as if you can hear the echo of time.
• Huayan Temple: The "Buddha with clasped hands and teeth bared" in the Hall of the Buddha's Teachings is so lively that it is no wonder it is called the "Oriental Venus".
• Nine Dragon Wall: The glazed bricks shine in the sun, and the nine dragons are lifelike, which is more imposing than what you see in the picture.
(A small regret: I didn't ask for an explanation, so I was a bit rushed. I must make up for it next time!)
The "Fatty Buddha" and "Baby Buddha" surroundings in the ancient city are super cute. I couldn't help but take a few home~
🗼 Yingxian Wooden Pagoda: An unexpected surprise
Didn't grab a ticket to the Hanging Temple? It doesn't matter! The Yingxian Wooden Pagoda gave me a greater shock - this is one of the few places where "the real thing is 100 times more amazing than the picture".
• A wooden miracle that has stood for thousands of years without a single nail or rivet. When I looked up at the tower, I got goose bumps.
• I sat in the shade under the tower for an afternoon, watching the clouds roll by and listening to the swallows circling. Even when a swallow "dropped" a pile of shit on my pants, I felt it was a special fate~
• Don't miss the Pure Land Temple a few hundred meters away! The kittens in the temple are very friendly, and there is a breathtaking caisson. The details are all the ingenuity of the ancients.
(Tips: The Hanging Temple and the wooden tower are dozens of kilometers apart. You must grab the boarding ticket in advance and book a car early!)
🍜 The taste of Datong that you can't eat enough
The prices are so friendly that I am moved! I ate it for three days without any thunder. I ranked it according to my taste:
369 (yellow rice jelly and Hunyuan jelly must be ordered) → Kaige (shaomai with thin skin and rich filling) → Hongya → Huayuan (mutton offal noodle soup is warm).
Even the taxi driver was very enthusiastic and took the initiative to take us to take a shortcut. We chatted like friends, which made me feel warm in my heart.
Datong is good, it's really worth it.
Here you can find the weight of ancient monuments, the hustle and bustle of life, and a leisurely pace.
I will definitely come again next time.
