Located at No. 46, Shaoshuaifu Lane, Chaoyang Street, Shenhe District, Shenyang City, the Zhang Xueliang Former Residence served as both the official and private residence of Zhang Zuolin and his eldest son, Zhang Xueliang. It covers a total area of 53,000 square meters, with a total construction area of 35,000 square meters. The Zhang Xueliang Former Residence comprises a vast complex of four parts: the West Courtyard, the Central Courtyard, the East Courtyard, and surrounding buildings.
The Central Courtyard, a traditional three-courtyard quadrangle facing north and south, is a traditional Chinese palace-style building. It covers 3,900 square meters, with a construction area of 1,460 square meters. Adhering to the architectural style of late Qing Dynasty southern Liaoning dwellings, it features blue bricks, gray tiles, a gabled roof, and carved beams and painted rafters. Brick carvings, stone drums, and window sills are decorated with themes of "happiness, wealth, longevity, and happiness" and "pine and crane longevity," showcasing the essence of folk craftsmanship. The doorway columns feature distinctive oil paintings, while the stone reliefs of "Ma Shang Feng Hou" and other inscriptions on the walls below the windows are truly remarkable. These invaluable artifacts serve as valuable resources for the study of ethnic architecture and folk customs. East Courtyard: The Grand and Small Green Houses. The Grand Green House (built in 1922) is a Romanesque-style building with blue brick walls and a grand, stately appearance. It was once Zhang Xueliang's office and reception area for dignitaries. With a construction area of approximately 2,460 square meters, the three-story Grand Green House stands 37 meters tall, making it one of the highest points in Shenyang at the time. The building is magnificent, with vivid, exquisitely crafted three-dimensional reliefs on the exterior, and unique murals in the main rooms, each boasting high artistic value. The Small Green House (built in 1918), located in the East Courtyard of Zhang's Mansion, is known as the "Garden Hall" for its central location in the garden. A two-story brick and wood structure, it blends Chinese and Western influences. Its blue brick and tile construction earns it the nickname "Small Green House." With a construction area of 450 square meters, the building forms a concave shape. The Small Green House features characteristic Western-style features, such as its mixed-line carvings, stone-studded windows, and a circular parapet at the rear. West Courtyard: The Red Buildings and West Courtyard Building are constructed of red brick.
Zhang Xueliang's Former Residence in Shenyang, also known as the "Zhang Family Mansion," is an important witness to modern Northeast China history. It blends Chinese and Western architectural styles and possesses both historical and artistic value.
