I visited the Forest of Steles ten years ago and had a wonderful experience. Unlike most people, my primary focus when visiting the Forest of Steles was the Xuanmi Pagoda Stele, because I've practiced the Liu style of calligraphy since childhood. Seeing the actual inscription on site back then felt very personal and intimate.
Last year, I heard that the Forest of Steles had a new building and a redesigned exhibition, and I've been thinking of visiting it again on my next trip to Xi'an. This time, after seeing the North Hall's exhibition, I felt it was indeed excellent. The environment and space were much better than the old hall, and the text descriptions were both informative and concise. Also, most of the ancient steles no longer had their glass covers, allowing visitors to get up close and have a more direct experience.
In short, it's beneficial to read and have direct contact with ancient Chinese culture—such opportunities are rare. The only downside was that the huge exhibition hall didn't even have a café or a place to refuel; there was only a vending machine selling only one type of mineral water, which forced me to leave early…
Of course, if you're not particularly interested in calligraphy or ancient Chinese history and culture, I personally advise against visiting.
