West Lake is surrounded by mountains on its north, west, and south sides, with the city center to the east. Its shape is roughly elliptical. The Bai Causeway and Su Causeway divide the lake into five parts: Outer Lake, Inner Lake, Yue Lake, West Inner Lake, and Little South Lake. Four islands—Gushan Island, Xiaoyingzhou Island, Huxin Pavilion, and Ruangongdun Island—are located within the lake. In 2011, the "Hangzhou West Lake Cultural Landscape" was inscribed on the World Heritage List. West Lake, located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, had a total area of 60.04 square kilometers as of March 2023. It extends from Songmuchang and Baolu in the east, turning north to the Children's Palace Square in Hangzhou city; south from Gulou along the foothills of Wushan, Ziyangshan, and the eastern side of Yunju Mountain; west from Liufangling, Zhuganshan, Jiuquling, and Mingrenling to Meirenfeng; and north from the foothills of Laoheshan Mountain, turning 30 meters north of Qingzhiwu Road. West Lake was formerly known as Wulin Water, Qiantang Lake, Mingsheng Lake, and Jinniu Lake, among other names.
