Qixia Mountain still teemed with chill in late February, its millennia-old relics visible through the sparse branches. Past the rigid, imitation-antique buildings, the five-story, eight-sided Tang Dynasty stupa stood majestically. Reliefs of flying celestial beings danced on the mottled stone walls, and a lotus-covered Sumeru pedestal bore the weight of a millennium. To the west, the Thousand Buddha Rocks stretched along the crimson cliffs.
