Mount Usu, located on the shore of Lake Toya, experienced continuous volcanic activity during the Showa era, causing the bottom layer to rise and form a new peak, hence the name Showa Shinzan. This mountain is one of the two active volcanoes in Lake Toya. The white smoke emitted from the mountain is the source of the clouds and mists in Lake Toya. Mount Usu is located on the south bank of Lake Toya, overlooking the Pacific Ocean to the south and Lake Toya to the north.
