I accompanied my children on a night hike up Mount Taishan. Born in the 1970s, I was determined to climb. Mount Taishan, the most important of the Five Great Mountains and a renowned cultural site, has a well-established night climbing service. During the summer, 40,000 to 60,000 people, young and old, flocked to the summit each day. We were never alone, and everyone was there to encourage each other. We reached the South Gate of Heaven in 4 hours and 50 minutes, a truly impressive feat. However, the summer was rainy, and fog thickened early in the morning, so we missed the sunrise, which was a shame. I felt there was room for improvement. First, most sections of the trail lacked nightlights, so I needed a flashlight throughout the entire hike. Second, the high number of visitors made the summit sanitary conditions poor. Third, the early morning Taishan management staff, shouting at visitors, was unfriendly.
