What People Are Saying About Jarash Qasabah District

Archaeological Site of Jerash

The history of Jerash is a long and detailed one that is best discovered whilst exploring the ruins and museums of the city itself. The city was conquered by General Pompey in 64 BC when it was named Gerasa. Gerasa grew in wealth and later became a colony in the third century. Due to an earthquake and a number of crusades leading up to the 12th Century, the city’s ancient sites were not discovered again until the end of the 19th century.

Arch of Hadrian

Emperor Hadrian was one of the four sages of the Roman Empire. In addition to the literary martial arts is also very powerful. The Middle East province in Rome is an important defense against the eastern empire. So the city Rome here invested a lot of financial and material resources to form a grand scale, which can be retained until now.

Oval Plaza

Oval Plaza of Jerash JordanThe spacious plaza measures 90mx80m and is surrounded by a broad sidewalk and colonnade of 1st century AD Ionic columns. There are two alters in the middle, and a fountain was added in the 7th Century AD. This square structure now supports a central column, which was recently erected to carry the Jerash Festival Flame.

Southern Theatre

avatar
Raed Alhaji
It is the largest and oldest of the three theaters of ancient Gerasa. Others are the North Theater and the one in Birketein, about 1.7 km north of the archaeological site. The South Theatre was built right next to the Sanctuary of Zeus on the west side of the same hill and may also have served cultic purposes. Although residents scavenged stones from here to build their homes until the 1950s, it remained remarkably well preserved. After extensive, though not always proper, restoration and reconstruction in various phases, the South Theatre, with its excellent acoustics, is used as a main venue for the Jerash Festival of Culture and Arts. From the upper rows of seats there is a great view over the archaeological site.

definitely reserve half a day for Jerash. it is worth a half day trip from Amman and it is some of the best roman ruins

Ajloun Castle

avatar

The Castle was constructed between 1184 and 1188 by the nephew of the Muslim military leader Saladin. Saladin fought against the Christian military during the Crusades in the 12th Century. The strategic location of the castle enabled Saladin’s army to look out across the Jordan Valley for invaders. The Castle was once only accessible via a drawbridge until 1214 when a new gate was built. Pigeons were used in order to transport messages to the army from the castle. Since the Crusades, the Castle has undergone a number of invasions, rebuilds, and earthquakes which has left very few original 12th Century features. Visitors can learn more about the castle’s history in the museum located on-site.

This temple was founded as a shrine to Artemis, the patron goddess of the city of Jerash and was appreciated and respected by the people of the city. The temple was built in the second century AD, and only 12 of the 32 columns were built, and it was previously one of the most beautiful and most important temple in (Gerasa), the former name of the city of Jerash.

Temple of Zeus

Raed Alhaji
Located in a valley surrounded by fertile hills, the city of Jerash was settled around the seventh millennium B.C. Thanks to its position at a crossroad between the north-south route that connected Syria with Trans-Jordan, and the east-west road that connected the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan Valley with the badia (the arid steppe), the site gained importance under Antiochus IV (175 – 164 B.C.). During the Roman period, Jerash, then known as Gerasa, became one of the most prosperous cities of the Decapolis. However, although it retained some importance during the Byzantine era (when churches and a synagogue were built), the site was progressively abandoned after the collapse of the Umayyad caliphate.
