The Kobe Light Festival was first held in December 1995, 11 months after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, to commemorate the victims of the disaster and keep their memory alive. Until now, the event has been a winter tradition held every December, with the Former Foreign Settlement and Higashiyuenchi illuminated. However, given its commemorative significance, starting in 2024, the event will be moved to January, closer to the date of the earthquake.
