Girls in Gis Washington – Federal Way Event | Isla Jiu Jitsu Academy
Sports & Fitness
Are you ready for some great Jiu Jitsu? because we are! Girls in Gis is a community of women and girls in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that come together through donation based training events. They are hosted, instructed, and attended only by women and girls. It's our time to come together! All ages and skill levels from any academy affiliation are welcome to attend. No experience required. Our events are designed for 100% participation, but do allow chaperones to accompany underage participants as spectators. Our events are donation based in order to provide equal opportunity to everyone. Your donations provide paid teaching opportunities for our guest instructor(s) and help to expand and make Girls in Gis programs such as our events, our leadership program and instructional training programs and our scholarships possible. If you are not able to make a donation please contact us and we will work with you so that you are able to participate. You can also purchase a GIG t-shirt, patches and more GIG merchandise with your donation. All orders can be picked up during the event. GIG Washington – Federal WayGuest instructors: DJoy Gomez, Jayda Macatangay & Vanessa Arango DJoy Gomez: Gabrielle Djoy Gomez is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt currently training at Isla Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Federal Way, Washington. She has been practicing since 2012, and was introduced to the sport through her family, who were already training. Coming from a military family background, she trained at various schools spending her blue/purple belt years at Ohana BJJ in Misawa, Japan. Later, moving to Colorado Springs, where she spent six years training at Wilson Brothers Grappling where she earned her black belt. She has competed in the no-gi scene for 10 years, but has since shifted to teaching and helping out at the gym. Outside of Jiu-Jitsu, she is a massage therapist, esthetician, and she loves baking in her spare time. Jayda Macatangay: Jayda Macatangay has been training since 2010 at the age of 7 years old. She started training shortly after watching her dad begin jiu-jitsu, and she’s loved it ever since. Jayda grew up competing locally around the PNW area with her family, and eventually started competing at IBJJF events by the time she was 11 and most recently competed at the Portland Open in September. As Jayda grew older within the sport she began teaching kids classes, and taking on more responsibilities around the gym as her family took over their gym’s ownership in 2015, where she also started a women’s program in 2022. Now 21 years old and a brown belt, Jayda is currently pursuing a degree in marketing at University of Washington, still spending as much time on the mats as she can both training and teaching. With jiu-jitsu as a big part of her life growing up, Jayda hopes to inspire and give back to the next generation of girls in jiu-jitsu as much as she can. Vanessa Arango: Vanessa Arango has been training for sixteen years earning her black belt under Ana Carolina Viera and Luanna Alzguir. Currently she trains under Jeff Macatangay at Isla jiujitsu. She is an occupational therapist by profession and is super passionate about jiujitsu. She loves teaching learning and sharing all she can about both with others. COST: $20 Min Donation.
