Join authors Teresa Valentini, Angela Weiser, and John Zilcosky for the book launch of Alternative Temporalities: The Emancipatory Power of Narrative at the Isabel Bader Theatre Centre for Comparative Literature. Copies will be available for sale. About the Authors: Teresa Valentini is a recent PhD graduate from the Centre for Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto and the recipient of the two-year Faculty of Arts and Science Postdoctoral Fellowship Award at the University of Toronto. Her recent articles have appeared in Forum for Modern Language Studies, the James Joyce Quarterly, and Quaderni di Italianistica. Angela Weiser is a writer and editor and holds an MA in Comparative Literature from the University of Toronto. Her projects include research assistance for the book Cloth that Changed the World: The Art and Fashion of Indian Chintz (Yale and Royal Ontario Museum, 2020) and corresponding exhibition at the Royal Ontario Museum. John Zilcosky is professor of German and Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto. He has won the MLA’s Scaglione Book Award and the Humboldt Foundation’s Bessel Research Prize. Zilcosky is a 2013 fellow of the US National Endowment for the Humanities and a 2022 Guggenheim Fellow. About Alternative Temporalities: The Emancipatory Power of Narrative Alternative temporalities have often emerged as a reaction to the normativizing force of time, demonstrating that time can be used as an instrument of power and oppression, but also as a means to resist this very oppression. Alternative Temporalities draws on analyses of modern literature to examine this often-neglected role of time. By exploring forms of temporal resistance in artistic representation, such as short stories and novels, that challenge the imposition of colonial, gender, or capitalist temporal orders, the book reveals how storytelling can be an essential tool in questioning and pushing back against coercive temporal structures. The book analyses literary representations of time that challenge dominant temporalities and intersect different disciplines such as gender and sexuality studies, trauma and Indigenous studies, race and identity, and religion. It features narrative analyses proposing alternative embodied experiences of time, focusing on topics including the temporality of the AIDS-affected body, the experience of time in prison, and slowness in opposition to modern acceleration. Ultimately, Alternative Temporalities aims to create new theories as well as practices that may foster more diverse and inclusive ways of perceiving and embodying time. Alternative Temporalities reveals how modern literature can help us rethink temporal categories and practices to resist normative time and foster diverse and inclusive temporalities. For those who don’t know of Madison Violet, it all began in 1999. Brenley MacEachern and Lisa MacIsaac (yes, Ashley's sister) met over weak coffee and broccoli omelettes, in a restaurant called The Green Room, in Toronto. It was a chance meeting, 1900 kms away from the small Cape Breton town where both Lisa and Brenley’s fathers were born. That was 20 years ago, and the pair have been writing and creating beautiful music together ever since. When you hear Madison Violet, the first thing you’ll notice is that their voices blend together, symbiotically, like family: Born to sing the same songs. Over the past decade and a half, the pair have taken to genre-bending, moving effortlessly from folk to pop to electronic to Americana. In a word, they are musical chameleons. Over the years, Madison Violet have acquired quite a few accolades, including a Juno nomination, a Canadian Folk Music Award for Best Vocal Group Album of the Year and a Critic’s Choice Award from Country Music People’s Magazine. Their songs have been featured in the notorious music magazine MOJO’s Top 10 Playlist, and received a mass of acclaim from outlets such as the BBC, the CBC, Maverick Magazine and NPR, and have earned the duo the Grand Prize in the 2010 Maxell John Lennon Song Writing Contest (which was voted on by a panel of distinguished artists including Elton John, Tim McGraw, Black Eyed Peas, Fergie, John Legend, Enrique Iglesias and Mary J. Blige). Madison Violet were on Germany’s WDR's list of ‘Best Bands of All Time’ as well as having song placements on various television shows. Their recent single ‘These Ships’ was released on one of the largest dance labels in the U.S., Ultra Records, and has garnered over 1,000,000 plays on Spotify already. Brenley and Lisa are singer-songwriters. Multi-instrumentalists. Harmonizers. Dog lovers. Nature walkers. Painters. Tennis fanatics. Amateur chefs. They have been described as pop, roots, indie, dance and Americana, but this quote perhaps sums them up best... Madison Violet has suddenly appeared like a ray of sunshine on a rainy day. www.madisonviolet.com The Upstairs Lounge is a licensed restaurant and bar, doors open at 6 pm for dinner service, the concert starts at 7:30 pm. Please note this is a listening venue. Information Source: Beacon Ridge Productions | eventbrite
