Metaphysics Metaphysics. Milan Metaphysics | Museo del Novecento
Jan 28–Jun 21, 2026 (UTC+1)
Milan
Exhibitions
This exhibition comprises a main exhibition and three "exhibition chapters," held in three major museums across Milan, and is an interdisciplinary project created specifically for the city. The "Metaphysics/Metaphysical Themes" project, curated by Vincenzo Trione, brings together metaphysical masters and their international "successors" and "students" in the 20th and 21st centuries. The exhibition at the Museum of the 20th Century, exploring the relationship between metaphysics and Milan, is part of Vincenzo Trione's curated exhibition project, held concurrently with the main exhibition "Metaphysics/Metaphysical Themes" at the Royal Palace of Milan. The public will be able to appreciate 50 selected works, including sketches, models, costumes, archival materials, and photographs, showcasing the work of De Chirico, Savinho, and Carla in Milan, the capital of Lombardy, and their collaborations with some of Milan's most important art and cultural institutions. Exhibits include set and costume sketches they created for La Scala in the 1940s and 50s, as well as period photographs and preparatory drawings for their design of "Bagni Misteriosi" for the Milan Triennale. The exhibition concludes with Mimmo Paladino's poetic reinterpretation of the relationship between the city and art movements, a result of his imaginative dialogue with Alberto Savinio's reflections on Milan in his novel *Ascolto il tuo cuore, città* (Listen to Your Heart, City). Ten paintings, arranged in sequence, create an involuntary neo-realist cinematic atmosphere that complements the original novel. This project, spearheaded by the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Milan City Government, is a collaborative production of the Royal Palace of Milan, the Museum of the 20th Century, the Brera Gallery, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Italy, and the Italian Art Museum, and published by Electa. It is part of the cultural program for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. The entire catalogue and publications for the Metafisica/Metafisiche project are published by Electa, aiming to rediscover the city's legacy that transcends transience.

Milan
Celebration
For art lovers, Milan in April is an absolute must-see. Milan Art Week is a vibrant art extravaganza that spans the entire city, while the prestigious Milan International Art Fair (miart) offers art enthusiasts an exceptional opportunity to explore classical and contemporary art styles. Following its 2021 theme of "Silence," 2022's "First Movement," 2023's "Crescendo" continuing its musical metaphors, 2024's focus on "No Time, No Place," and 2025's focus on "Between Friends," miart returns from April 13th to 19th, 2026, with the theme "New Direction." Celebrating its 30th anniversary, miart's theme is both a tribute to John Coltland and a manifesto, inspired by Coltland's famous albums and his centenary, while also celebrating this milestone in collaboration with another jazz giant, Miles Davis. The art fair has undergone profound innovation: from curatorial content to galleries, from visual language to the visitor experience, it aligns with the evolving, increasingly dynamic art market. Collectors and art lovers from around the world can enjoy masterpieces from the early 20th century to the present, works that reach the pinnacle in quality, engagement, and audience interaction.
