It's such an important story to tell and told so compellingly. Wonderful' Michael Morpurgo ' A dazzling combination of evocative prose and meticulous research, Craftland is an impassioned undertaking and novel portrait of the country's past and how we might rethink our future ' Kate Bryan Craftland Britain has always been a craft land. Stepping inside the workshops of blacksmiths and wheelwrights, cutlers and coopers, bell-founders and watchmakers, we glimpse not only our past but another way of life - one that is not yet lost and whose wisdom could shape our future. For as long as there are humans, there will be craft. It is all around us, hiding in plain sight, enriching even the most modest things. And in this increasingly digital age, it is perhaps more valuable than ever. Craftland is a celebration of that deeply necessary connection between our creative instincts and the material world we inhabit, revealing a richer and more connected way of living. Date: Thursday 25 September Time: 1pm Venue: Sevenoaks Bookshop, 147 High Street, Sevenoaks, TN13 1XJ "This is such an excellent book! Short and succinct, over a single evening the characters shift, change and reveal themselves overturning expected powerplays - like the best sort of stage play! It truly captures the very tip point of a triangle/anvil of change - with dinner! And Paris! I loved it! " Fleur's Bookseller Review “Full of soul, with characters who are real, relatable and flawed. I loved Just a Little Dinner.” Ceci Browning, THE TIMES “In the cinema and the theatre, feasts that descend into disaster are a distinctly French speciality. Cécile Tlili manages to reinvent this tradition with her very first novel.” PARIS MATCH Just A Little Dinner In tired, hot Paris at the end of August, a group of friends, who'd rather still be at the sea, meet for a dinner in one couple's apartment. Taking us behind the shutters of the Sixth Arrondissement, with a cast of characters that both delight and repel, fractured relationships, manipulation, bad behaviour and desperation are all laid bare in this very contemporary take on a Parisian huis clos story. What starts as just a little dinner ends up having monumental consequences for everyone. The book was shortlisted for the 2024 Prix Goncourt du Premier Roman and won the 2023 Prix Litteraire Gisele Halimi for women's writing. Cécile Tlili Cécile Tlili graduated from MINES Paris Tech and held several important positions at French energy company Engie before founding an alternative school for neuroatypical children. Un simple dîner is her first novel. This event was made possible by the support of the Institut Français in the United Kingdom. Information Source: Sevenoaks Bookshop | eventbrite

Evelyn had the surprising thought that bodies were sometimes wiser than the people inside them. She’d have liked to impress somebody with this idea, but couldn’t explain it. On a winter Saturday night in post-war Bristol, sisters Moira and Evelyn, on the cusp of adulthood, go to an art students’ party in a dockside pub; there they meet two men, Paul and Sinden, whose air of worldliness and sophistication both intrigues and repels them. Sinden calls a few days later to invite them over to the grand suburban mansion Paul shares with his brother and sister, and Moira accepts despite Evelyn’s misgivings. As the night unfolds in this unfamiliar, glamorous new setting, the sisters learn things about themselves and each other that shock them, and release them into a new phase of their lives. In this delightful story of two young women coming of age, Tessa Hadley explores the everchanging desires, the sudden revelations and the lasting mysteries that are bound up with who we are, and who we might become.
