Eveline & Clay is an enchanting musical theatre performance at the James Joyce Centre in Dublin 1. This captivating presentation brings to life two poignant stories from James Joyce's Dubliners, masterfully adapted by Michael Holohan and Paul O'Hanrahan. Set in a newly modern Dublin, the performance follows the journeys of two women seeking elusive freedom amidst their restricted lives.
Originally premiered in 2009, Eveline & Clay is a revival of the successful collaboration between the renowned composer Michael Holohan and the award-winning Joyce interpreter and actor Paul O'Hanrahan. These two stories, 'Eveline' and 'Clay', were instrumental in Joyce's development as a writer. 'Eveline' was published in the Irish Homestead in September 1904, shortly before Joyce left Ireland with Nora Barnacle. 'Clay' was completed by December 1905 and later included in the collection Dubliners in 1914. Both stories shed light on the patriarchal control that governed women's lives in Dublin, delving into themes of family, work, and religion.
Music plays a vital role in these narratives, serving as a conduit for memory and socialization. As a Dublin native, Michael Holohan has composed new piano music for this performance, drawing inspiration from the city's north side where the stories unfold. Supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport, and Media, the James Joyce Centre is the perfect setting to experience this immersive production.
Directed by Balloonatics Theatre Company's Paul O'Hanrahan, an acclaimed actor and Joyce specialist, Eveline & Clay promises to transport audiences into the captivating world of James Joyce's Dubliners. O'Hanrahan's theatrical adaptations of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake have garnered Fringe First awards at the Edinburgh Festival, while his Bloomsday performances of Ulysses in Dublin have become a beloved tradition. Accomplished composer and pianist Michael Holohan, who has resided in Drogheda since 1983, brings his extensive musical expertise to this mesmerizing production. With numerous accolades and international recognition, Holohan's compositions have been celebrated both domestically and abroad.
