Moor Trees is organising an event to bring together individuals interested in supporting the restoration of native woodland on Dartmoor. This annual event, which also includes the charity's AGM, will shine a light on the work of the charity, as well as guest speakers who will talk about inspiring and important work taking place on Dartmoor. The event will be hosted in the Green Room at Boringdon Park Golf Club in Plympton. The day will start with the AGM where you will hear from our Chair of the Board of Trustees Jenny Isaac, and our Chief Executive Helen Aldis, about our achievements over the past 12–18 months. To include reflections on our programme of engaging events that have been taking place throughout 2025, to mark our 25th anniversary year. Our guest speaker, Naomi Oakley from Challacombe Farm, will talk to us about the value of trees and ambitions of the Central Dartmoor Farmer Cluster, looking at ways in which farmers are integrating more trees and scrub into farmland and how this supports a future vision for increasing tree cover on Dartmoor. Moor Trees’ Woodland Officer, Jess Duffy, will share recent priority mapping and plans to increase tree cover along Dartmoor's river valleys by creating riverside corridors and supporting natural regeneration of woodland. The event will conclude with an afternoon of Seed Gathering at Plymbridge Woods as part of the charity's annual programme of woodland visits sponsored by the Woodland Trust. The event is open to anyone involved with or interested in the work of Moor Trees. Please note that only members of Moor Trees will be able to vote in the AGM, but all are welcome to attend this part of the programme. We respectfully suggest a £10 donation for the attendance of this event, to support the charity's ongoing work towards our goal of restoring Dartmoor’s lost native woodlands and temperate rainforests. Join us for the 2025 edition of The Big Talk, the flagship lecture of FUTURES, our South West festival of research and discovery. This year we welcome Professor Richard Thompson OBE FRS , a pioneering marine biologist whose work has transformed global understanding of plastic pollution. In this thought-provoking talk, Professor Thompson will explore the origins and far-reaching impacts of plastic pollution, from the highest mountains to the deepest oceans, and explain how tiny fragments known as microplastics have become a global environmental challenge. Drawing on decades of research, Richard will share stories from the frontlines of science and offer practical ideas for change. What policies, innovations and lifestyle choices can help protect marine ecosystems? How can we all play a role in reducing plastic pollution? This is a chance to hear from one of the world’s most respected experts in marine conservation. Whether you're passionate about the environment, fascinated by science, or just curious about the state of our seas, this event is for you. About the Speaker: Professor Richard Thompson OBE FRS is Director of the Marine Institute at the University of Plymouth and founder of the International Marine Litter Research Unit. He received the 2023 Blue Planet Prize for his work on microplastics and was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2019. He advises governments and international bodies on ocean health and continues to lead influential research around marine pollution and sustainability. This event is free, but booking is essential.
