Gerry Loose (1948-2024) was a well respected poet with long connections to both Lapidus Scotland and Glasgow Botanic Gardens. As Poet-in-Residence at the Gardens, Gerry organised events and created poems for slates and stones. Renga is a communal form of writing practiced by Gerry, with roots in Japan. We plan to mark the four seasons with a renga at the Gardens, with the first event taking place at the end of May. During this second event we'll visit those poems of Gerry's that remain in the Gardens, and use them and their settings as prompts for writing. Facilitated by Mandy Haggith and hosted by Sukhema Butler . Please note this is a drop-in event. You're free to join us at any point, and to stay for as long as you'd like. The event is free, but if you would like to contribute to its costs please consider buying a 'donation' ticket. Suggested donation £10, or what you can afford. Please note that you only need to book once – either a free ticket, or a by donation ticket. If you book a free ticket, and later decide you wish to make a donation, you can do so via the Lapidus Scotland website here . How Speed Dating Works in Glasgow When you arrive at the Glasgow venue you will be greeted by our friendly professional hosts. Once everyone has arrived and registered we will briefly explain the format of the evening. The ladies will then be asked to make their way to their allocated table. Once the ladies are seated the gentlemen will be asked to proceed to their first date. You will have 4 minutes to chat to each date, once the 4 minutes is over we will ring a bell to indicate the time is up and for the gentlemen to move to their next date. Four minutes is long enough to see if you click with the person you are talking to and whether you would like to see them again and also short enough if you don't. At the end of each date you have a brief few moments to make some notes on the person you have just dated. This is something to help jog your memory for the post event matching process the next day. Half way through the event you will have an interval break so you can nip to the toilet or top up your drink. Once all the dates are over you have the opportunity to stay on at the venue to mingle freely with others. Good ventilation is essential for healthy, comfortable, and resilient buildings—but as mechanical systems become more dominant, it's critical to ask: are we designing for long-term wellbeing, or creating new dependencies? This event explores why ventilation matters—not just for compliance or technical performance, but for occupant health, comfort, and the psychological benefits of environmental control. As buildings increasingly rely on mechanical systems, understanding building physics, material choices, and passive design strategies becomes more important than ever. Through case studies and discussion, we’ll demonstrate how to design for indoor air quality while considering flexibility as well as ethics. We’ll look at how passive and natural ventilation, and low-impact construction materials can support both regulatory standards and 'passive survivability'—the ability for buildings to remain safe and comfortable during power outages or emergencies. The session will highlight practical examples from engineering and architectural practice, with a focus on avoiding 'eco-bling' and prioritising real, long-term benefits for occupants. Participants are invited to bring project-specific questions for open discussion. Our speakers: Janice Foster , Chartered Engineer and researcher specialising in building performance evaluation (BPE) at MEARU, GSA. Richard Atkins , Chartered Architect who has designed sustainable buildings and advised clients, government and stakeholders for over 40 years. Sandy Halliday , Chartered Engineer, who has worked in building research, training, policy guidance and as project advisor for local and national government and private clients for over 30 years. Sam Foster , Net Zero Leader at NatureScot, Architect with strong interest in beautiful, low energy architecture constructed from non-toxic materials to create healthy environments. Jessica Noel-Smith , Chartered Architect, Founder of Beyond Access, PhD Researcher at University of Stirling and Associate at Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC). Discussion will be facilitated by Magdalena Blazusiak , who is the current Vice-chair of SEDA, Chartered Architectural Technologist, lecturer and PhD researcher at RGU, with interest in human centric retrofit supporting health and wellbeing. WHERE: Reid Building, Glasgow Schol of Art, Principal Seminar Room 1 – Ground floor and online WHEN: 18th September at 5.30pm for 6pm start (6pm-8pm) Please let us know your access and dietary requirements. "The Sea" is a new environmental strand within IberoDocs, bringing together four powerful short films by women filmmakers that reflect on our complex relationship with the ocean and coastal life. Our journey begins with Hello Sea! by María Goya Barquet, a poetic and personal documentary that explores what the sea is, for a person who has never seen it. With Blow! by Neus Ballús, poetry is merged with reality, as we follow a research team and the singing of the whales. The animated lines of Percebes by Laura Gonçalves carry us to the Portuguese coast and the social and ecological cycles surrounding one of the ocean’s most prized delicacies, while Spirits & Rocks: an Azorean Myth by Aylin Gökmen captures the deep emotional and geological tremors of life on a volcanic island. Together, they form a resonant chorus—stories of memory, longing, survival, and transformation—each uniquely anchored by the voices and visions of women. In collaboration with DocNomads. All films shown with HOH captions. Followed by Filmmaker Q&A (With BSL interpretation) & Live Music. Information Source: IberoDocs | eventbrite

Amy survived melanoma as a teenager and a brain haemorrhage soon after being elected during the first covid lockdown, following this she successfully campaigned to make the House of Commons more accessible for MPs with disabilities and long term health conditions by introducing proxy voting. Amy returned to work with no support from medical professionals involved in her care and credits Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland tech-enriched rehab at the University of Strathclyde for getting her back to the House of Commons. The Left And Elections: Learning From The Past, Fighting For The Future Join us for a day of discussion on rebuilding socialist ideas and organisation. With perspectives on Your Party, the movement and the working class toda y. In the first quarter of this century the patterns of political expression and organisation on the radical left have varied. Largley, they have been dominated by mass movements. Here, we can reference the anti-war movement of 2003, and the Palestine solidarity movement today. We have also seen other movements emerge around austerity, Scottish independence and climate change. Within these developments, socialists have played a central role. Alongside these extra-parliamentary campaigns, there have been attempts at utilising political parties as instruments of opposition and resistance. And, to provide an alternative to a failed establishment. These have taken various forms. In Greece, Syriza came to power. In Spain, Podemos became the country's third lasrgest force. And in the UK, the mass movements made a turn towards the Labour Party in the form of Corbynism. Each of these, and other such examples, met structrual challenges which eventuated in their demise. And, within these projects, there are very different conceptions of what is possible, what is desirable, and how best to navigate a volatile era. Today, the process of political fragmentation is intensifying. Reform far outstrip the Tory party in the polls on the radical right. At the same time, the launch of the "Your Party" process by Zara Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn has attracted 900,000 sign-ups, showing an incredible appetite for radical change. This represents a new dynamic in politics, in which the once invincible two party system, is falling apart. In Scotland there are specific dimensions to examine around the national question, and a different set of challenges in relation to the SNP. Moreover, electoral politics opens up a range of questions for socialists, about the relationship between the state, the movement, political parties and the working class today. It is in this context that Counterfire Scotland has arranged this day of discussion. We will assess the problems and challenges bound up with previous electoral initiatives, and look at the some of big questions facing the left today: - From Syriza to Corbynism: What are the key lessons for a new left party? - The state and the system: How can we confront British capitalism? - The working class and the movement today: Strategies for the left - Socialism in Scotland: What kind of organisation do we need? - Theory and practice: Ideological preparation for an era of uncertainty The aftrenoon will be structured around a series of panels and talks, to be released soon. Check back here for updates - or better still - sign up to our substack to be kept up-to-date with all of our meetings and activities. Note: This event is free, with options to pay £5 or a solidarity price of £10 to help us cover costs. Information Source: Counterfire Scotland | eventbrite
