From director “Michael J. Paradise” (not his real name), The Visitor is a beautiful and baffling sci-fi horror mash up of The Omen, Rosemary’s Baby and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Posing as a kindly babysitter, mysterious cosmic entity Jerzy Colsowicz travels to Earth in search of foul mouthed eight year old Katy Collins, the only living descendant of the evil alien mutant Zatine. Their battle of wills may determine the fate of humanity, and even the universe! Perhaps the best film to earn a 5.2 average rating on IMDb, The Visitor is what you get when you mix heavy handed Christian allegory with a total disregard for narrative coherence and hundreds of real pigeons. “A genuinely stupefying experience…the Mount Everest of insane ‘70s Italian movies.” - Mondo Digital Doors 6:30pm Film starts 7:00pm approx Please note that the event space at Bridge End Social does not have step free access Presented as part of Scalarama Leeds DIY Film Festival - scalaramaleeds.co.uk Information Source: Glue Gun | eventbrite

Arts Literary Arts
We're delighted to have Owen Davies and Ceri Houlbrook joining us in conversation with fellow author Stu Hennigan to talk about their book, Folklore . The event will be taking place on the 25th of September at 7pm. Folklore is A gripping guide to the weird yet everyday world of British folklore. In this ground-breaking book, two leading experts provide the definitive guide to British folklore past and present. Owen Davies and Ceri Houlbrook explore folklore in all its remarkable variations, from village rituals and fairy tales to UFO legends and internet fanfiction. Travelling through a landscape of witches, wizards and wicker men, they reveal how folklore has been researched and written about in the past and show how it continues to be lived in the present. At the same time, they provide the reader with a valuable toolkit for understanding how to interpret the diverse examples given. The book’s key message is that folklore is much more than the fossilised remains of a distant, rural past. Folklore is and always has been ubiquitous, dynamic and political. It is a living tradition that draws from many sources, including migrant communities, and is forever being renewed and updated. Stu Hennigan is a writer, poet and musician from the north of England. His book Ghost Signs (Bluemoose, 2022) was shortlisted for two national literary awards including Best Book By A Non-Parliamentarian at the Parliamentary Book Awards in 2023. His debut novel Keshed will be released in February 2026, followed by Disappear Here, his landmark study of American culture and society analysed through the novels of Bret Easton Ellis, in 2027, both with Ortac Press. His short fiction, essays, poetry, criticism and journalism have been published widely in print and online. He also plays guitar in the rock band Kamień. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite

Tudor-inspired Yorkshire Rose Surface Embroidery with Form in Fabric | Calverley Old Hall Community Space

Tudor-inspired Yorkshire Rose Surface Embroidery with Form in Fabric | Calverley Old Hall Community Space

Sep 27, 2025 (UTC+1)
Calverley
Arts Craft
Enjoy an afternoon of creativity, stitching a beautiful Yorkshire Rose design in a friendly, supportive - and historic - environment! Join Marianne from Form in Fabric to learn or develop your skills in decorative hand embroidery, working with an embroidery hoop, needle and embroidery floss to create your own version of the Yorkshire Rose. The rose is found repeatedly on the walls of Calverley Old Hall’s Painted Chamber, and this simplified Tudor era rose is our inspiration for the workshop. The design will be provided by Marianne but you will be free to customise it with your own choice of colours, stitches and extra decorative elements. You will be given instructions and guidance for stitches that were used in the Tudor period, including simple running and seed stitches, whipped stitches, lattice work and couching. Hand embroidery is a slow process so participants should not expect to completely finish their work in the class. But everyone will take their work home with them along with the embroidery hoop, needle, threads and full instructions. This workshop is suitable for complete beginners or those wanting to refresh their hand-sewing skills. Please note, you will need reasonable hand/finger mobility and eyesight. A little about hand embroidery: Freestyle or surface embroidery encompasses any form of hand embroidery where the design isn’t determined by set patterns, counted stitches or the weave of the base fabric, so it is extremely flexible in allowing the embroiderer to interpret almost any image or text they wish onto most base cloths. There are huge numbers of named stitches which can be used in whatever combination the artist desires, and embellishments such as beads, metallic threads, and found objects can be incorporated for added effect. Designs and styles can range from simple line drawings up to intricate and almost photographic “thread painting”. A bit about the artist: Marianne is an upholsterer and sewing specialist with a lifelong background in textiles, embroidery, dressmaking and upcycling. She loves the simplicity, accessibility and mindfulness of sewing and believes that anyone can learn to sew and express themselves creatively through needle and thread. Marianne can guide you in both practical and artistic methods of embroidery. She can show you how to use sewing to make beautiful decorative items and also transfer these skills to extend the life of your clothes and textiles. Follow her @forminfabric on Instagram or Facebook . What to expect on the day All equipment and materials will be provided, but please feel free to bring any of your own tools and materials that you might prefer to use. We will also have tea, coffee and biscuits available. This workshop is for all aged 16+. Any 16/17 year olds must be accompanied by an accompanying paying responsible adult aged 18+. Getting here There is no parking on site, the building is in the centre of Calverley, on Woodhall Road, so we encourage visitors to use Leeds and Bradford’s excellent public transport to travel to the event. Please check local travel information for full details. If you need to drive, there is ample on street parking in the surrounding area. Please park considerately for our neighbours. The address is: Calverley Old Hall Community Space, Woodhall Road, Calverley, LS28 5NL. What3Words: ///police.hunt.moons Full information and meeting location is provided with your booking confirmation. Accessibility Calverley Old Hall Community Space has been designed to be as accessible as possible, however it is an historic building with restrictions. There is level access to the main front door, the pathway from the road is a combination of gravel and paving slabs. In the Community Space there is level access throughout, with a small 2cm metal ridge across the threshold of the external doorway. Head to www.foragebox.co.uk/workshops or view our Eventbrite profile to browse all available sessions. What To Expect Our 'Taster' events are our shortest workshops, open to anyone looking for a brief but informative introduction to the wonderful world of foraging. No formal food is provided, but there will still be plenty of tasting along the way. DURATION: 2 hours We like to keep some elements a surprise for the day, but here is what you can expect from your foraging workshop: a short introduction regarding the safety and format of the day discussions around foraging tips, safety, ethics, etiquette, sustainability and the law a circular walking route taking in different growing environments around the site. Expect a route of around 2-3km predominantly on footpaths a closer look at edible wild species and any poisonous lookalikes by a professional forager a chance to slow the pace of modern life down, meet new people and immerse yourself in a soul-nourishing activity, reconnecting with nature and discovering new flavours small tasters of wild food - this may even include freshly-picked items straight from the wild. our workshops are run in a welcoming and informal fashion, where attendee questions and contributions are encouraged after the event, you will be sent a follow-up email containing a list of everything we found on the day. Please do not expect photos or descriptions in this email - it is purely a list for reference purposes, and we find it helps people do further research in their own time. Please note: as with most of our events, this is an educational experience and not a 'basket-filling' session . At the end of the session, there may be a small selection of our wild products and workshop vouchers available to purchase (card and cash accepted). This is a recent element of our events after enough attendees made enquiries about it - there is no pressure to buy anything having already bought tickets but sometimes people want a souvenir to take with them! Please speak to your tutor about this at the end. Who Is This Workshop For? These events are perfect for everyone - families, bushcrafters and dog-walkers alike! Nobody is made to feel out of their depth or silly for not knowing what certain things are, so these events suit absolute novices to more experienced hobby foragers alike. We strongly believe that foraging is for everyone , with all demographics welcome, regardless of age, ability, gender or ethnicity. Please read our FAQs further down the page to find out about dogs, children and mobility. Please arrive well in time for the start of the workshop, allowing extra time for the distance from your parked car to the meeting point and any toilet trips - we don't tend to wait for late-comers! Your foraging guide for the day should arrive on site at least an hour before the start and will start gathering the group together approximately 15 minutes before the official start time. If you cannot find your tutor around that time, there is a chance you are looking in the wrong place, so please check the event information for the exact location (not the postcode) Signage can sometimes be limited, so keep an eye out for anyone with a foraging basket! Minimum number of guests for this event to go ahead: 8 people PLEASE NOTE: We do not provide guests with a contact telephone number for your tutor. This is for privacy purposes but also because it is impractical to do so - your tutor simply wouldn't be able to take a call whilst with a group.
