Fistful of Colours: Moments of Chinese Cosmopolitanism brings together artworks from the late Qing Dynasty to the present moment to explore the social history of art, with a particular emphasis on the situatedness of Chinese ink works amidst its political milieus. With reference to the concept of Chinese cosmopolitanism as proposed by scholar Pheng Cheah, the exhibition connects the artistic and scholarly advocation embodied by the artists presented, telling a story of the social life between artists and society through both modern and contemporary experiences of the overseas Chinese intellectual and mercantile communities, their pursuits of Chinese modernity, and their collective cultural commitments at the dawn of globalisation.

BETWEEN DECLARATIONS AND DREAMS: ART OF SOUTHEAST ASIA SINCE THE 19TH CENTURY | National Gallery Singapore

Singapore
Exhibitions
Housed in the former Supreme Court building, the UOB Southeast Asia Gallery features over 300 artworks that trace shared artistic impulses across Southeast Asia. Beginning in the mid-19th century, the exhibition navigates Southeast Asia’s art history as an ongoing encounter with the new, as artists across the region negotiate the meaning of art and seek to reinvent vernacular expressions and aesthetics. Presented largely chronologically and interspersed with key turning points in artistic sensibilities, the exhibition also identifies how art is inextricably linked to the region’s turbulent social and political history. The exhibition owes its title to Chairil Anwar, one of Indonesia’s most cherished poets. In his 1948 poem Krawang-Bekasi, Chairil Anwar lamented the massacre of villagers by Dutch colonial troops in West Java, giving vent to the desire for national independence at the time. This line can also be said of the experience of many artists in the region, caught between manifesto and dream, personal and political. The curatorial narrative explores four themed locations in roughly chronological order, each of which critically examines common artistic impulses in the region during each period: Authority and Anxiety, Imagining the Nation and the Self, Performing the Nation, and Redefining Art.

G.E.M. I AM GLORIA WORLD TOUR G.E.M.’s lasting impact on the music industry reflects in her long list of record breaking achievements: she is the youngest female artist to headline a concert at the Hong Kong Coliseum, the youngest nominee for Best Mandarin Female Singer, and she also holds the distinction of being the first-ever Billboard Radio China Artist of the Year. After a six-year hiatus, G.E.M. returns to the global stage with her “I AM GLORIA” world tour, delivering songs of light and hope amid life’s challenges. G.E.M.'s career milestones include winning the 2020 Golden Melody Award for Best Album with “City Zoo” and being recognized as Spotify's most-streamed Chinese female artist globally. In 2021, her music video for “Light Years Away” set the Guinness World Record as the most-watched Chinese music video on YouTube. The following year, she redefined traditional album releases with “Revelation”, a groundbreaking release featuring a 14-episode music video series. In 2023, after years of anticipation, G.E.M. returned to the global stage with her “I AM GLORIA” world tour, singing about light in darkness and hope amid chaos. G.E.M.'s music is more than just melodies; it's a balm for the soul. Eight years ago, G.E.M.’s Queen of Hearts tour symbolized self-mastery and empowerment. Now, with “I AM GLORIA”, beginning in Paris, she offers a lavish cinematic production designed to inspire and heal. Over recent years, the world has undergone profound upheavals, from the fallout of the pandemic to successive wars and natural disasters. The loss of life, economic downturns, food shortages, and other crises have left many feeling adrift, searching for a glimmer of light in the darkness. As a singer-songwriter, G.E.M. channels hope and vitality through her music, offering solace to hearts in need. Reflecting on her mission, G.E.M. shares "Gloria is the name my father gave me. I've always cherished it. Over time, I’ve come to see it as my calling—to be the salt and light of the world." Having endured life’s trials and triumphs, G.E.M. now shares her journey with the world. Her music, a mirror of her personal experiences, speaks to both the heights of joy and the depths of struggle. The “I AM GLORIA” world tour celebrates resilience and underscores the unifying power of music. With every performance, G.E.M. invites audiences to embark on a shared journey of healing, self-discovery, and renewed hope.

In 2015, INSTINC commemorated SG50 with remembering LKY, a heartfelt tribute exhibition featuring ten artists reflecting on his enduring legacy. Now, in 2025, as Singapore celebrates SG60, we come together once more to honour his vision, resilience, and the profound impact he left on our nation and beyond. 10 Years: Remembering LKY 十年:怀念李光耀 is a reflection on time, progress, and the lasting relevance of Mr. Lee’s principles. Through the lens of contemporary artists, this exhibition revisits his influence—not just as a historical figure but as a guiding force shaping our present and future. A theme of this exhibition is Mr. Lee’s visionary Garden City concept—his belief that Singapore should not only be a thriving economic hub but also a lush, green sanctuary where nature and urban development coexist in harmony. His dedication to transforming Singapore into a city of parks and greenery shaped the very landscape we live in today. Just as he planted the seeds—both literal and metaphorical—for future generations, this exhibition explores how his vision continues to define Singapore’s identity. As we celebrate SG60, this exhibition is not just an act of remembrance but a dialogue between past and present, urging us to reflect on how we continue to uphold and reinterpret the values Mr. Lee instilled. A tribute. A reflection. A call to remember. Whitestone Gallery Singapore is proud to present our first Gutai Movement showcase; GUTAI: Beyond the Canvas. Following our first exhibition ERUPTION: Japanese Post-War Avant-Garde in New Art Museum Singapore, we are delighted to bring you another show of the Gutai Art Association. Tearing of paper, muddling paint with their feet, throwing bottles of paint, work focused on color and gesture, bold and energetic brushstrokes to express raw, emotional power and even wearing a dress composed of electric bulbs. This compilation of eccentricities and performances became characteristics of the Gutai movement. First founded in 1954 by Jiro Yoshihara after World War Ⅱ, the Gutai Art Movement was an Avant-Garde collective that sought to break traditional art forms and experiment with techniques. Its philosophy emphasized the connection between art matter and the human spirit, advocating for innovation and unrestraints in art— remaining as an emblem of creativity, characterized by unthinkable techniques and deep philosophical engagement. Gutai’s first generation members consisted of Jiro Yoshihara, the founder of Gutai, along with Shozo Shimamoto, Kazuo Shiraga, Chiyu Uemae, Atsuko Tanaka, Tsuroko Yamazaki, Yasuo Sumi and Sadamasa Motonaga. Their pioneering transformed the landscape of contemporary art, emphasizing the act of creation itself as a performative, physical process. By using their bodies as tools in the creative process, they broke away from traditional artistic conventions. Using their experimental approaches to materials, often incorporating unconventional substances like metal, textiles, and even electricity, their focus on material experimentation and engagement pushed the boundaries of what art could be. Motivating viewers to be active participants in the creative process, these artists laid the groundwork of Gutai for not only their future members, but future movements in performance, installation, and conceptual art. A second generation of artists later joined Gutai, merging innovative techniques with philosophical engagement. They distinguished themselves by addressing post-war themes such as identity, individual expression, freedom, and materiality, emphasizing artistic processes and community gatherings. Featuring iconic works from Tsuyoshi Maekawa, Shuji Mukai, Takesada Matsutani, and Yuko Nasaka, this exhibition consists of innovative techniques and social themes ingrained into the Gutai movement where viewers will be able to encounter the works of these artists who navigated the complexities of contemporary life in changing Japan. Maekawa (1936, Osaka, Japan), had revolutionized the art scene by making use of abnormal materials such as linen cloth, sand and cement, crafting experimental paintings which captured the essence of his materials. His works invite his viewers to reflect on conventional ideals that may have underpinned the movement.

Last year, Zhao Renhui’s exhibition project See the Forest was presented at the Singapore Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, deeply echoing the theme of “outsiders everywhere”. This year, the work will return to Singapore, a country known for its green environmental policies. In 2007, Zhao Renhui founded the Institute of Critical Zoologists as a creative platform that combines the study of nature, artistic expression, and strong narrative construction. Based on “documentary” and “research”, his works are highly subjective and imaginative. Through video works, sound and sculptural installations, See the Forest explores lesser-known intersectional stories and moments of obvious dependence between human society and nature. The exhibition reveals how secondary forests provide intersections for colonization, migration, sustainability and discovery, while also suggesting that the edges of cities - especially well-planned cities - may be the most intense boundaries in existence. Through this exhibition, people can better understand the evolution of Singapore, revealing how the shaping of the natural world by human urban design has formed an ecosystem that echoes the trajectory and composition of urban populations.
