The Magic of Books Monthly lecture series with William Kiesel Presented by PRS and Ouroboros Press In the PRS LIBRARY! Lecture Five: The Corpus Hermeticum: Books of the Hermetic Adepts Q&A to follow the lecture Lecture Series Overview “Without books, there is no memory, and without memory, a culture cannot exist.” - Fernando Báez Join William Kiesel for a series of engaging talks on books and book culture surrounding the wisdom traditions housed in the PRS Library. Books are vessels of coagulated thought, distilled and filtered through the minds of authors, artists and adepts. Understanding the technology of the book and the laboratory of the library grants the seeker access to the esoteric secrets that can aid them on their journey of discovery. Presented in the peaceful environs of the PRS Library, William uses some of the bibilographic treasures of the library to illustrate multi-disciplined topics aimed at bringing deeper awareness into these important literary tools which have preserved the ageless wisdom for centuries. August 14 - The Corpus Hermeticum: Books of the Hermetic Adepts Hermes Trismegistus is regarded as one of the essential wisdom teachers in several traditions, including alchemy, qabalah, gnosticism, neoplatonism and beyond. William Kiesel will speak to the contexts and connections these texts have and show examples preserved in the PRS Library which embrace the visions, philosophies and practices expressed by this luminary figure. About William Kiesel William Kiesel has walked the path of esotericism for over 30 years. His practical experience and historical knowledge of occult literature and culture draws from such diverse disciplines as Hermeticism, Neoplatonism, Qabalah, Thelema, Alchemy, Rosicrucianism, Theosophy, and Ceremonial Magic. With his decades as an antiquarian bookseller, his training in letterpress printing and bookbinding, Kiesel brings his love of books and scholarship together as publisher at Ouroboros Press. He is also faculty at 22 Teachings School of Hermetic Science and Magical Arts. www.bookarts.org Ticket Price: $22 (In Person Only) Please email events@prs.org or phone 323-663-2167 with any questions. Across the Spooniverse | Mingei International Museum

Apr 12–Aug 17, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Diego
Exhibitions
This exhibition presents over 100 spoons from across the globe, each a reflection of a specific cultural context–between intimate traditions of home and family, celebratory preparations of food and drink, and the spiritual gestures of giving thanks for sustenance. Around the world, spoons are essential implements that help us scoop, stir, mash, skim, cook, and eat! Some spoons come straight from nature–a gourd cut in half with its own built-in handle, for example, or a curved seashell. Others are carved of wood, bone, or horn, and some are made of fired clay, or hammered or cast metal. Because of their role in the preparation and serving of food and drink, spoons are often cultural symbols of abundance and generosity. Sometimes the act of stirring, serving, or ladling is spiritually sacred. These spoons can bear visual references to the concept of blessing or a connection to the divine source of nourishment. Contemporary spoon designs include an array of forms and materials, ranging from cast resin to mass-produced flatware hand-adorned with beads or precious stones. This exhibition presents over 100 spoons from across the globe, including examples from Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Some are adorned with exquisite carvings of human and animal figures, and others are brilliant for their simplicity of form. Some show decades or even centuries of wear and use, and others are pristine. As objects of use, spoons are universally understood. Each object is a reflection of a specific cultural context–from intimate traditions of home and family to community and celebratory preparations of food and drink, and the spiritual gestures of giving thanks for sustenance. The design of each spoon reflects the work of a maker, a person often unknown to us, whose creativity inspires a sense of wonder.

“Layered Narratives: Quilted Stories of Gender and Race at the 1876 Centennial” explores gender and racial politics at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition through the medium of centennial quilts from Mingei’s permanent collection. The centennial celebrated the 100-year independence of the United States from Great Britain and featured various installations—ranging from foreign exhibitions to art galleries and governmental-related spaces. Taking place at a time when colonialism was romanticized and Jim Crow was nearing, many of the existing voices and stories from this event are portrayed through Eurocentric and patriarchal lenses. This exhibition focuses on the absent voices and unheard stories found at this centennial. Packed with various symbolisms and meaning, the centennial quilts featured in Layered Narratives give insight into both women’s political involvement and Black exclusion at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition and in the quilts.

Cultural Experiences
Join us on August 9th to celebrate the 15th anniversary of Mike Hess Brewing at HessFest! This exciting event is packed with music, fun, and family-friendly activities, featuring craft beer from Mike Hess Brewing, delicious food, and local vendors. We’re proud to support two incredible charities: Oncology and Kids (OAK) and Zero8Hundred. Both organizations uplift communities facing profound challenges—whether veterans who’ve served in conflict or families battling pediatric cancer. These heroes endure PTSD, physical hardships, survivor’s guilt, and tragically high suicide rates. Supporting them fuels our mission to champion kids and vets. OAK dedicates itself to transforming the lives of children and families affected by cancer. Zero8Hundred empowers transitioning veterans by pairing them 1:1 with a military-connected counselor (veteran or military spouse) to identify their unique needs and connect them to vital resources across San Diego, Riverside, Imperial, or Orange counties. Come raise a glass to making a difference! The MHB Purpose: Bringing People Together Over Great Beer Around Great Causes Buy your tickets TODAY, then grab your shades, blanket, and lawn chairs, scoop up the kids and your friendly pooch, and head beachside to Pier Plaza Park along Seacoast, just south of the Imperial Beach Fishing Pier for this super-fun, summertime event. An awesome way to enjoy summer with your friends and family! (Please no oversized umbrellas, personal sized umbrellas that affix to your chair are acceptable. We want to make sure everyone can see.) This year, enjoy an IBAC -run no-entry-fee cornhole tournament for prizes; food from FOUR food vendors plus one popcorn vendor including City Tacos, Doggos Gus, Full Belly BBQ, Bread and Cheese, and Party Pop. In addition, we will have plenty of beverages (Mike Hess Brewing beers, house-made root beer and more), and the main event: a concert featuring Jimmy's Buffet , sullvn , PHT & The Honky Tonk Nights and Morgan Leigh Band ! As this event is for charity, we want to do everything we possibly can to ensure it's success. Part of this effort is comprised of having stellar digital photo and video marketing materials. By purchasing your Hessfest XV ticket through eventbrite.com you consent to being on camera and the use of such materials however we see fit. (Social media, print media, TV appearances.) Thank you! Cultural Experiences
You are invited to join us for the i naugural Stanley Ryder Foundation gala! We lost our son Stanley when he was only 14 years old. He was the sweetest kid you could ever hope to meet. Stan had this tremendous sense of empathy and always thought about the other guy. Stanley also had a deep love for the game of soccer and had his sights set on playing in college and maybe even beyond, like his dad. In this spirit, we have formed the Stanley Ryder Foundation, which will look to build soccer fields/parks in underserved communities, ensuring that the youth of the area will have the opportunity to play on safe and well-maintained fields. The idea of creating a space where families and friends can gather and share moments, memories and laughs, in a spot created because of Stanley, is something that he would have loved. As such, our first soccer park will be located in Juarez, Mexico. The backstory here is that one day, Stanley was driving with his dad in El Paso, Texas. And they drove by a very poor section of the border town of Juarez. The degree of poverty is very visible, and he could not believe it. He went on and on, they don’t have electricity, they don’t have plumbing, and they don’t have parks. It really impacted him, and over the years, he would bring it up often. As such, this seemed an appropriate locale for the first 'Stanley Ryder Soccer Complex'. It will put a smile on hundreds of kids’ faces – and that would have made Stanley very happy. We are hoping to fund our project with this event/gala. We hope you can join us on 8/9 and invite you to follow our journey at www.stanleyryderfoundation.com . GALA DETAILS Enjoy an open bar throughout the evening and catered authentic Mexican cuisine Live and Silent Auctions Live music by Radical Waves to round out the night Any questions, please reach out to Eric Wilson: 206.817.5478 Information Source: Stanley Ryder Foundation | eventbrite
