However, the timescales involved in these motions are typically very long, particularly for studies of distant galaxies. Learn more about our performer here! Astronomy Lecture: The Birth of Cosmic Behemoths: Insights into the Earliest Stages of Galaxy Cluster Assembly Dr. Devontae Baxter, postdoctoral researcher at UC San Diego, will offer insights into his work on Galaxy clusters. Abstract: Galaxy clusters –– the largest gravitationally bound structures in the universe –– are the most extreme outcomes of hierarchical structure formation in an expanding universe. In the nearby cosmos, mature galaxy clusters have been studied in great detail, providing important insights into the nature and distribution of dark matter, as well as the astrophysics that drives galaxy evolution in dense environments. However, the protocluster stage of galaxy cluster assembly remains an open frontier in our understanding of galaxy evolution in the early universe. In this lecture, I will share our current theoretical and observational understanding of the earliest stages of galaxy cluster assembly and discuss the next-generation observatories poised to significantly advance this area of research. Learn more about our speaker and his astronomy topic here! WEATHER The event will be held rain or shine. Weather may restrict telescope viewing, but all other activities will still take place. The Psychedelic Furs with Special Guest Rooney Born out of the United Kingdom’s post-punk scene, The Psychedelic Furs are led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler and bassist Tim Butler. Their music has influenced bands and listeners drawn the musical intersection of rawness and romancism. After arriving on the post-punk landscape more than four decades ago, The Furs became a staple of college and alternative radio with “Love My Way, “Pretty in Pink, “Heaven, “The Ghost in You,” and “Heartbreak Beat.” They have released eight studio albums, multiple compilations, a boxed set, and a live concert DVD. The song “Pretty in Pink” inspired one of the most iconic motion picture soundtracks of all time. In 2020, they issued “Made of Rain,” their first studio album in nearly 30 years. It charted in several countries and became their second highest-ranked UK album. The album appeared in multiple end-of-year “Best Albums” lists. The Furs, however, especially thrive live in concert. They’ve headlined at the UK’s famed Glastonbury Festival, and more recently at the Hollywood Bowl, London’s Royal Albert Hall, New York’s Radio City Music Hall and Nashville’s Grand ‘Ole Opry among other esteemed venues. With a dazzling live show, they continue to tour regularly across the globe. Information Source: Music in the Park San Jose | eventbrite

Join bestselling local author Evelyn Skye at Books Inc Palo Alto for a reading, discussion, and book signing of her newest fresh, magical, and hopelessly romantic novel The Incredible Kindness of Paper! About the book:In elementary school, Chloe Hanako Quinn is assigned Oliver Jones as her pen pal partner. Before sending her letter, she also whispers a note into it…and he hears her. Little does she know it would be the beginning of a friendship that would bloom into something more. That is, until disaster strikes, and Oliver and his family disappear without a trace. Now over twenty years later, Chloe is a high school guidance counselor in New York City. But life in the Big Apple is not what she dreamed it would be as she faces a layoff, rising rent, a situationship, and loneliness. Desperate for encouragement, she gives herself a pep talk via uplifting messages written on yellow origami paper that she folds into roses. When one of the roses unexpectedly finds its way to a neighbor in need of cheering up, a desire to spread kindness and optimism is sparked in Chloe, who begins folding more roses and leaving them around town. Across the city, Oliver has picked himself up from the rough circumstances that forced him to leave everything behind as a teenager—including Chloe. Now a successful financial analyst, Oliver’s past continues to haunt him. But when the city is suddenly inundated with yellow origami roses, a specific one finds its way into his hands and changes his life forever… I don't think I've ever read a book quite like THE INCREDIBLE KINDNESS OF PAPER. It gripped me from the very beginning with its beautiful prose and heartfelt characters. It's touching and whimsical, and it's exactly what the world needs right now. — Ethan Joella, author of THE SAME BRIGHT STARS Evelyn Skye is the New York Times bestselling author of several novels, including The Hundred Loves of Juliet and The Incredible Kindness of Paper. A graduate of Stanford University and Harvard Law School, her books have been published worldwide and translated into sixteen languages. Find out more at EvelynSkye.com.
