Join SheJumps and San Juan Expeditions this January for the SheJumps x San Juan Expeditions AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course in Silverton, CO. This course, instructed by female identifying professional guides, is a partnership between SheJumps and San Juan Expeditions. Registration for this course must be completed through the San Juan Expeditions website. This all-women's AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course aims to uplift and promote the women's outdoor community. It also extends a warm welcome to trans, cisgender, and non-binary skiers/splitboarders who center their education in women-focused spaces. Through inclusivity, strength, endurance, and education, participants will connect in the mountains and learn from each other, creating confident partners. 10% of the course proceeds will go towards SheJumps' mission to get more girls and women outside. The course will take place in Silverton, CO, with recommendations for places to stay available through Manager Sarah Moore. The course itinerary includes a classroom session on Friday, January 19th, followed by field training. Saturday, January 20th, and Sunday, January 21st will be spent primarily outside, with the certification received via email within 2 weeks of completion. Please note that this course is a one-time partnership between SheJumps and San Juan Expeditions for the AIARE 1 course. All participants must sign the SheJumps Participant Waiver before attending, and those experiencing cold-like symptoms are asked not to attend. The 2024 Silverton Whiteout is set to take place on February 3rd in Silverton, Colorado. This annual event will mark its 10th anniversary, promising an exciting day filled with thrilling activities for snow bike enthusiasts, XC skiers, runners, and snowshoers who prefer self-powered adventures. While the event caters predominantly to snow bikers, XC skiers are also welcome to participate. If you opt for XC skis, it's recommended to bring your older pair, as the course may include sections with rocks, sand, or even some tarmac mixed in with the snow. The meticulously designed course offers a unique experience, combining alley riding, a glimpse of the historical Blair Street, a bit of singletrack, moments of solitude amidst nature, and breathtaking views. Stretching approximately 8 miles, the course duration is estimated to be around one to two hours, depending on snow conditions. Throughout the course, you'll find two aid stations: Arrastra, where you can find a tent, fire, and snacks, and the top of Shrine Hill, offering a cozy fire and bacon to indulge in the beautiful surroundings. The event offers various categories, including solo, duo, 3-4 person teams, and family teams. Additionally, a shortened version of the course will be available for kids 14 and younger. The She Jumps Hut-Based AIARE Level 1 avalanche course is designed to give you a full introduction to backcountry travel. When you take your level one with San Juan Expeditions you will get hands-on experience analyzing the avalanche hazard and using your observations to make decisions in the field. We are committed to providing both tools for understanding the avalanche problem and the terrain management skills you can only get from observing an experienced guide. You will be led by two female identifying professional guides. 10% of your registration goes towards SheJumps mission to getting more girls & women in the outdoors. You will meet at the Addie S Hut 15 minutes outsideSilverton, CO on Red Mtn Pass. Do not arrive before 6pm, due to a course leaving the hut prior to your arrival. Participants must be 18+ to register. Course dates: February 17-20,2025 Cost: $963.50 Students that are a great fit for our Avalanche Courses:Any current or future backcountry skier / rider that knows how to skin uphill and is familiar with their backcountry uphill equipment and how to use it. This person has ideally skied off-piste in untracked snow before and can safely ski single black diamond terrain inbounds. Practicing uphill to downhill transitions is highly recommended before taking this course. Students that may not be a great fit for our Avalanche Courses:Beginner skiers and riders and anyone that has not used uphill skinning equipment before the course and those that are not familiar with how to use their gear. We require that you can ski on untracked snow in black diamond terrain inbounds. We do offer private avalanche education courses on request for those that may need extra instruction and for non-skiers / riders that may prefer to snowshoe. You must have 4 students at minimum to create a custom course with us. FAQ's & Other Event InformationParking and getting to the event: The Addie S Hut offers free parking. Please make sure to stack cars, our team will ensure that cars are moved and in order to make space for other recreators. Check in: we will have a list of registered participants printed out, so we will check you in with your name. No need to print your ticket or pull it up on your phone. Accessibilty information: The hut is not ADA accessible. Restrooms are not gendered. Need rentals? Yes, participants are able to rent beacons, shovels, and probes for free from San Juan Expeditions. You also may rent backcountry setups including AT skis and splitboards, from our retail partner in our shop, Cripple Creek Backcountry in Silverton. Please ensure your rental is reserved at least a week prior to pickup. Please note that the course cost does not include guide gratuities. You are under no obligation to tip the guides, but 10-15% of the course cost is highly recommended. The guides pool tips and accept cash or Venmo. We recommend tipping $90-120 for this course.
