Beyond Gesture - Pencil Drawing from Observation SAT 5 OCT, 10.00 - 16.00, Newlyn Studio, Newlyn Art Gallery, TR18 5PZ In this day long drawing workshop recent Picture Room artist Jason Walker will guide you through a series of exercises, using simple tools and honing your observation skills. There will be plenty of one to one guidance and individual support throughout. The day is split into two parts. Part 1: 10.00 - 13.00 A brief introduction to Jason's process in relation to the object drawings he made for the Picture Room, followed by a short demonstration. You will then be guided through a series of drawing tasks, for you to practice using the tools and the measuring technique, covering mapping out and measurement, tone/value structure - that is, how to create light - using a range of pencils. After which you will settle down for a longer sustained drawing task together as a group, all drawing from the same object, deepening your understanding of mapping/measurement, tone/value structure in relation to the subject you are drawing. 13.00 Lunch Break Part 2: 13.45 - 16.00 In the afternoon, you are free to carry on with your drawing from the morning session or select another object (or objects) to work from. For this purpose, a selection of objects will be provided, but you may have an object at home you would like to draw instead, or that you have perhaps tried drawing and got stuck with, that you are welcome to bring along. Jason will provide guidance on how you can adapt the tools and techniques covered in the workshop to your own needs and ways of working and to a wider range of subjects - such as complex still life, portrait, landscape. All drawing materials are provided, but you are welcome to bring in your own graphite pencils if that's your preference. You will be working on A3 sized paper and with a pencil range 4H, 2H, B, HB, 2B, 4B. £85 per person, max 12 participants Lunch is not included - you are welcome to bring your own or you can buy lunch from FIKA café in the gallery garden.
