Duo Étrange is redefining 21st-century vocal chamber music, creating contemporary classical art for modern audiences. Since their founding in 2023, soprano Vanessa Croome and cellist Sahara von Hattenberger have gained early acclaim, including a début album with ATMA Classique and world premieres from Canadian composers like Nicole Lizée and Jeffrey Fong, supported by the Canada Council for the Arts. Upcoming highlights include their arrangement of Ligeti’s Mysteries of the Macabre at Yellow Barn, performances at Montreal’s Salle Bourgie, and New York’s Tribeca New Music series. Duo Étrange champions diversity, prioritizing female, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ creators. Their unique soprano-cello pairing explores new timbres, collaborating with artists like pianists Kyoko Hashimoto and Joanne Kang and videographer Huei Lin, featured in The New York Times. Anchored in Canadian roots, Vanessa and Sahara grew up near each other on Vancouver Island, eventually meeting in Montréal, where they debuted at the Chapelle Historique du Bon Pasteur. Their mission is to blend classical tradition with modern aesthetics, bringing fresh perspectives to contemporary compositions, small ensemble works, and digital projects. www.duoetrange.com 🎻 Sahara von Hattenberger, cellist Originally hailing from Comox, Sahara von Hattenberger is a cellist based in NYC and Montreal. Upon completing her Master’s Degree at McGill university she signed with a Tokyo-based music agency and lived in Japan under contract from 2019 to 2020. After working as a soloist and touring the country extensively, she returned to Canada during the pandemic and founded “Duo Kogarashi”, an ensemble dedicated to promoting cultural exchange between Japan and Canada. In 2021, she was the recipient of a grant from the Canada Council of the Arts to commission two new works for Duo Kogarashi which promote Japanese culture in Canada. The hour-long performance was filmed as a virtual concert and included works from both Japanese and Canadian composers. Duo Kogarashi is currently actively performing Japanese works around Canada. In October 2024 she released her first album with ODDSOUND records entitled “1Q84” with musicians Joanne Kang (piano), Jim Doxas (drums) and Adrian Vedady (bass). The album was featured on PANM360 as well as dozens of articles and radio stations such as Radio France. Local music and art cooperative CVGBs is proudly presenting it’s first ever New Year’s event, an inclusive dance party featuring three diverse live acts & DJs. Co-headlining will be two acts that have caused multiple long line-ups to see them play at Cumberland’s Woodstove Festival: Vancouver’s Devours, and Salt Spring Island’s Drama Queen. Opening the show will be a solo set from Denman Island’s Avro. Drama Queen, is the lush, nostalgic, bejewelled synth-pop band that your pelvis never knew it needed. Reminiscent of Heroes-era Bowie and Kate Bush, their music will confuse, delight and alight your feelings and your senses. Give in to the emotional pop-star paradise soundtrack that is Drama Queen. Drama Queen is a synth-wave band, and the latest invocation from Knick Tomlinson formerly of Superfeather. The group consists of Knick on Synthesizer, Pierre Vincent Forgues on Synthesizers, Harley Dunn on bass guitar and Ben Frey on Drums. Effortlessly channeling the essence of the past while crafting a sound distinctly their own, Drama Queen weaves a tapestry of neon melodies and pulsating rhythms. They transcend the ordinary and envelope listeners in a vibrant sonic journey reminiscent of an electrifying '80s dreamscape dancehall. https://www.instagram.com/drama.queen.band/Devours (they/them) is the DIY electropunk project of Vancouver-based musician Jeff Cancade. Across four acclaimed underground albums, including the recent Polaris Prize-longlisted Homecoming Queen, Devours has written confessional and confrontational electronic music about masculinity, body image, gay politics, and inner-city queer existence. They have toured Canada and the US, received coverage from Vice, CBC, Exclaim, and the Globe and Mail, and have performed at festivals such as SXSW, Treefort Music Fest, Up Here Festival, Purple City, Vancouver Jazz Fest, and more. Music Concerts
A legend is coming to back to town! Valdy, a Canadian music icon, is going to entertain the audience with his well-known and much-loved songs at a fundraising concert at St. George’s United Church on Friday, March 21, 2025, 7pm. The concert will raise money for the Comox Valley Youth Music Center (CYMC) and St. George’s United Church. Tickets are $25 in advan ce or $30 at the door. Valdy, born Valdemar Horsdal in Ottawa, Canada has been part of the fabric of Canadian pop and folk music for almost 40 years. He’s a singer, guitarist and songwriter who catches the small but telling moments that make up life. According to the Toronto Star, “Valdy remains one of the country’s purest and most credible storytellers.” Recognized especially for “Play Me a Rock and Roll Song,” his bitter-sweet memory of finding himself, Valdy has sold almost half a million copies of his 13 albums, has two Juno Awards (Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year), a total of seven Juno nominations and four gold albums to his credit. One of Canada’s most influential songwriters, Valdy’s composition, “A Good Song,” was recorded under the title “Just a Man” by the venerable Quincy Jones. “Play Me a Rock and Roll Song” has been recorded by a few artists, including John Kay of Steppenwolf. CYMC is a catalyst, inspiring young musicians to pursue a lifelong passion for music and theatre. It serves as a beacon for music and theatre education for aspiring musicians and performers through the operation of the annual CYMC Summer Music School. St. George’s raises funds through a variety of events during the year to benefit local non-profits. In 2023, the church donated more than $40,000 to community groups, including Habitat for Humanity, LUSH, the Comox Valley Food Bank, the Coldest Night of the Year, the Comox Valley Child Development Association, the Transition Society, and many others. SHOW REVIEWS… “…judging by last night’s performance, Valdy’s musical magic is alive and well.” Beacon Herald “One of the best evenings of entertainment Confederation Centre has ever seen….a man of formidable talents.” Charlottetown Evening Patriot “Valdy remains one of the country’s purest and most credible storytellers.” Toronto Star “He’s a master of country, folk, rock and blues, and the catch is that whatever the sound, people know that Valdy is sincere.” Saskatoon Star Phoenix “Valdy’s show is a disarming and practical blend of respect for the audience and show business expertise.” Edmonton Journal Information Source: St. George's United Church | eventbrite
