Recently she was selected for residencies with both BangOnACan and Yellow Barn, and was chosen to be a Pole Releve artist by “Le Vivier”, Montreal’s premier contemporary music organization. Upon completing her Master’s Degree at McGill university she signed with a Tokyo-based music agency and lived in Japan under contract from 2019 to 2020. After working as a soloist and touring the country extensively, she returned to Canada during the pandemic and founded “Duo Kogarashi”, an ensemble dedicated to promoting cultural exchange between Japan and Canada. In 2021, she was the recipient of a grant from the Canada Council of the Arts to commission two new works for Duo Kogarashi which promote Japanese culture in Canada. The hour-long performance was filmed as a virtual concert and included works from both Japanese and Canadian composers. Duo Kogarashi is currently actively performing Japanese works around Canada. In October 2024 she released her first album with ODDSOUND records entitled “1Q84” with musicians Joanne Kang (piano), Jim Doxas (drums) and Adrian Vedady (bass). The album was featured on PANM360 as well as dozens of articles and radio stations such as Radio France. In 2025 she will be releasing her second album through the ATMA Classique label with the group she founded with soprano Vanessa Croome, “Duo Étrange” with commissions by Nicole Lizée (BBC Proms, Bang On A Can), Airat Ichmouratov, and Laurence Jobidon. 🎶 Vanessa Croome, soprano A classical singer praised for her impeccably clean coloratura (Le Devoir) and incredible vocal talent that moved us to tears” (Ludwig Van Montreal), Vanessa hails from Nanaimo, BC and is known for her work in international classical, contemporary, and baroque repertoire. Concerts For A Common Cause, a series of fundraising concerts hosted by St. George's United Church since 2023, will kick off the new year with a February concert & dance featuring The Georgia Strait Big Band. The Band is continuing the legacy of Big Band Music in the Valley that dates back to the 1940's. For the past 17 years, The Georgia Strait Big Band has been professionally conducted by Greg Bush, Professor of Jazz Studies. Band personnel are a very dedicated group of local musicians ranging in age from 17 to 83. Conductor Greg Bush commented , This afternoon performance will offer something for everyone with concert style seating and a dance floor to enjoy a wonderful two-set performance featuring some of your favourite songs assembled from the band's 300 -song repertoire. Valdy, a Canadian music icon, is going to entertain the audience with his well-known and much-loved songs at a fundraising concert at St. George’s United Church on Friday, March 21, 2025, 7pm. The concert will raise money for the Comox Valley Youth Music Center (CYMC) and St. George’s United Church. Tickets are $25 in advan ce or $30 at the door. Valdy, born Valdemar Horsdal in Ottawa, Canada has been part of the fabric of Canadian pop and folk music for almost 40 years. He’s a singer, guitarist and songwriter who catches the small but telling moments that make up life. According to the Toronto Star, “Valdy remains one of the country’s purest and most credible storytellers.” Recognized especially for “Play Me a Rock and Roll Song,” his bitter-sweet memory of finding himself, Valdy has sold almost half a million copies of his 13 albums, has two Juno Awards (Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year), a total of seven Juno nominations and four gold albums to his credit. One of Canada’s most influential songwriters, Valdy’s composition, “A Good Song,” was recorded under the title “Just a Man” by the venerable Quincy Jones. “Play Me a Rock and Roll Song” has been recorded by a few artists, including John Kay of Steppenwolf. CYMC is a catalyst, inspiring young musicians to pursue a lifelong passion for music and theatre. It serves as a beacon for music and theatre education for aspiring musicians and performers through the operation of the annual CYMC Summer Music School. St. George’s raises funds through a variety of events during the year to benefit local non-profits. In 2023, the church donated more than $40,000 to community groups, including Habitat for Humanity, LUSH, the Comox Valley Food Bank, the Coldest Night of the Year, the Comox Valley Child Development Association, the Transition Society, and many others.
