Prof Nikos Papastergiadis presents his two latest publications, The Cosmos in Cosmopolitanism (2023) and John Berger and Me (2024). In this event, distinguished Professor Nikos Papastergiadis (Australia) will discuss his two latest publications, which were written in parallel during the COVID-19 lockdown, weaving together the critical urgencies and the thought processes that brought them into being. The presentation will be introduced by Ute Meta Bauer (Germany/Singapore), Professor, NTU School of Art, Design and Media and Principal Research Fellow, NTU CCA Singapore. In The Cosmos in Cosmopolitanism (Polity, 2023), ProfessorNikos Papastergiadis revisits the intellectual history of the cosmos by looking at how philosophers and visual artists have related with themes associated with the cosmos from antiquity to the present. By engaging a plurality of perspectives and visions produced both in the West and in the Global South, the book argues for the importance of common connections in the face of the existential threats faced by all forms of life on the planet. The first manifestation of a growing inclination towards “telling stories grounded in experience”, John Berger and Me (Giramondo Publishing, 2024) is a memoir of the deep relationship between the author and his former mentor, renowned English writer, artist, and art critic John Berger (1926–2017). Part biography, part autobiography, part cultural history essay, the book revolves around the shared interest in art and migration and the biographical entanglements of these two public intellectuals as well as it reveals the generative dynamics of a lifelong friendship. For both publications, a limited number of copies will be available for purchase. Speaker Bio Nikos Papastergiadis is the Director of the Research Unit in Public Cultures and Professor in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne. Furthermore, he is the co-founder (with Scott McQuire) of the Spatial Aesthetics research cluster. He is the Project Leader of the Australian Research Council Linkage Project, “Large Screens and the Transnational Public Sphere,” and Chief Investigator on the ARC Discovery Project “Public Screens and the Transformation of Public Space.” Prior to joining the School of Culture and Communication, he was Deputy Director of the Australia Centre at the University of Melbourne, Head of the Centre for Ideas at the Victorian College of Arts, and lecturer in Sociology and recipient of the Simon Fellowship at the University of Manchester. Throughout his career, Papastergiadis has provided strategic consultancies for government agencies on issues of cultural identity and has worked in collaborative projects with internationally renowned artists and theorists. He was the Chair of NTU CCA Singapore’s International Advisory Board from 2015 to 2024. Information Source: NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore | eventbrite

One of the most popular shows this year! Comics tell a joke and 3 Master's have to tell the same joke with a better punchline! We did this show last year and it was a big success. We tried again last month and it was a huge success! It was literally non-stop laughter! A comedian would come on stage and tell a joke for less than a minute and then the panel of Masters would have to tell a funnier joke on the spot. Then you, the audience, vote on which Punchline was funnier. So far the Open Mikers have won each time but the last show was close! Can the Masters finally pull off a win? Come and join us to find out! The Lemon Stand provides a full bar of drinks, free popcorn for each table, and a food menu of bits and bites which you can find on our website. At The Lemon Stand, we do our best to bring together the comedic arts and the community with an entire venue created just for Comedy in Singapore so we hope you come out and enjoy your night with lots of laughs and entertainment! Disclaimers: Tickets are non-refundable or exchangeable 24 hours before shows and Eventbrite's fee is nonrefundable. The minimum age to attend shows at The Lemon Stand Comedy Club is 18+ years and content is considered for a mature audience only. Thank you for your understanding.
