Emily Mae Smith x René Magritte | Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium
Oct 11, 2024–Mar 2, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brussels
A recurring character in Emily Mae Smith’s oeuvre is an anthropomorphic broomstick figure, inspired by the segment The Sorcerer’s Apprentice in Disney’s Fantasia (1940), which was based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s 1797 poem. This figure becomes her avatar, simultaneously referring to the painter’s brush, the working tool of housemaids, the mythologized instrument of the witch but also the phallus, giving a sexual dimension to her paintings.
Hao Liang:Pape Satàn Aleppe | Gladstone Gallery
Oct 18–Dec 21, 2024 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brussels
Gladstone is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Hao Liang. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. The enigmatic phrase “Pape Satàn Aleppe,” uttered by Pluto in Dante’s Inferno and defying centuries of interpretation, sets the tone for Hao Liang’s thought-provoking exhibition. Drawing direct inspiration from Umberto Eco’s similarly titled work—which explores the erosion of individual-community bonds and the fragmentation of a shared historical narrative—this exhibition presents diverse cultures, histories, and philosophies. By adopting this cryptic title, the exhibition amplifies the calculated ambiguity inherent in Hao Liang’s works, inviting the viewer to grapple with layers of meaning at the intersection of visual history, literary allusion, and philosophical inquiry.
Benoit Platéus: Coriums | Brussels
Nov 8–Dec 21, 2024 (UTC+1)ENDED
Brussels
Meessen is delighted to present Coriums, Benoit Platéus’s third solo exhibition at the gallery. Comprising a series of new paintings, the exhibition’s title, Coriums, carries a dual meaning. On one hand, from its Latin origin, it refers to the dermis—the skin’s inner layer—invoking ideas of depth and texture. On the other hand, in English (from core), corium describes a magma of molten and mixed fuels within the heart of a nuclear reactor, a substance that can form in the aftermath of a nuclear meltdown. With this layered title—purposefully plural—we see Platéus’s fascination with both the “skin” of painting, encompassing its surface and ornamentation, and the underlying elements that constitute it: background, pigments, and complex colour blends.
