The YoungLiars Summer Training Festival 2024 in St. Louis offers an eight-day intensive physical training program for performers in Clown, Yoga, and Suzuki disciplines. Led by experienced St. Louis theatre artists, Chuck Harper teaches Suzuki Method, Jef Awada instructs Red Nose Clown, and Maggie Conroy leads the Yoga sessions. Participants can expect over thirty hours of rigorous training to enhance their stage presence and physical abilities. This annual festival is open to all experience levels, with classes held nightly from July 20 to July 27 at the St. Louis Shakespeare Festival Rehearsal Studio. The Suzuki Method focuses on expressive presence and breath control, Red Nose Clown cultivates vulnerability and playfulness, while Yoga aims to ground performers in their bodies through a blend of postures and flows. No prior experience is necessary, and all registered participants have the flexibility to attend individual classes or the entire program. Join a guided tour of new exhibition Dunera: Stories of Internment — displaying over 200 artworks created by the internees who live through this extraordinary little-known chapter of Australian history. Led by curators Louise Anemaat and Andrew Trigg, experience the stories of the internees from their harrowing journey to Australia to the realities of camp life and beyond. This tour will meet at the entry point to the exhibition (Level 1, Mitchell Building). Louise Anemaat is Executive Director, Library and Information Services and Dixson Librarian at the Library. She is the author of Natural Curiosity. Unseen art of the First Fleet (NewSouth Publishing, 2014), an analysis of the traditions of natural history art production in Australia and Britain during the 18th and 19th centuries. If you’re curious about trying different art-making techniques or developing the ones you have, this is the workshop for you! It’s designed for all levels of experience. We’ll use Library collections as inspiration and explore our creativity in a beautiful art-making space. In this full-day workshop, you’ll take an old book and alter its pages with paint, collage and stitching! There will be plenty to inspire you because you will also sketch and draw in the Paintings Gallery and view extraordinary, rarely seen artists’ books from our collection. We will supply all materials but if you have an old book that you would like to transform, please bring it along. This concert from Hearing the Music of Early NSW 1788–1860, an Australian Research Council Discovery Project, investigates adjacent and connected musical practices across Indigenous, classical, popular and folk music traditions in Australia. In a sonic exploration of how culture and culture-making might be renewed, shared, celebrated and connected, this music responds to a call from history and a call from our own time. Presented by leading scholars and performers from the University of Sydney including Neal Peres Da Costa, Jacinta Tobin, Jakelin Troy, Toby Martin, Daniel Yeadon, Anna Fraser, Julia Russoniello, Mikaela Oberg, Laura Case, Jake Magi and Naya Cook. ​Come behind the scenes to see the Conservation Laboratory and the work undertaken by the Collection Care Branch. The Collection Care branch ensures the rich and extensive collections of the State Library are available to all those who wish to use them, now and in the future. The Collection Care Branch consists of several teams of conservators, registrars, and storage specialists with responsibility for the various aspects of collection care. The collections include many varied formats: books and serials, manuscripts, prints, drawings and paintings, photographs and negatives, architectural plans and maps, objects, film, oral history, and sound recordings. Please note: this tour is only suitable for ages 12 and up, and involves a significant amount of walking. The tour will depart promptly at 2pm and latecomers will not be admitted. Would you like to cycle together as a family but can't cycle or are a bit wobbly? Can you ride a bike but your children can't and not sure how to teach them? Can your kids cycle, but you don't feel confident to ride with them? Have children of different ages and abilities and not sure how to manage this? This session is for you! We understand that the requirements of every family are very individual, so these sessions will be tailored to your individual family needs and taught by one of our experienced qualified cycle instructors. Bikes and helmets are provided, or bring your own if you prefer. Training takes place in a traffic-free environment. These sessions are available to all families, including non-traditional family groups such as foster families, kinship carer families, and families with additional needs. Why not book a session during the summer holidays and get out and get active with your kids? PLEASE NOTE - Adults MUST be accompanied by a child and children MUST be accompanied by a child. Everyone MUST come to ride a bike. Children must be under the age of 16 (over 16s are welcome to join any of our regular Adult Cycle Training sessions) Please book one ticket per family - thanks!
