Arts Film
"The Sea" is a new environmental strand within IberoDocs, bringing together four powerful short films by women filmmakers that reflect on our complex relationship with the ocean and coastal life. Our journey begins with Hello Sea! by María Goya Barquet, a poetic and personal documentary that explores what the sea is, for a person who has never seen it. With Blow! by Neus Ballús, poetry is merged with reality, as we follow a research team and the singing of the whales. The animated lines of Percebes by Laura Gonçalves carry us to the Portuguese coast and the social and ecological cycles surrounding one of the ocean’s most prized delicacies, while Spirits & Rocks: an Azorean Myth by Aylin Gökmen captures the deep emotional and geological tremors of life on a volcanic island. Together, they form a resonant chorus—stories of memory, longing, survival, and transformation—each uniquely anchored by the voices and visions of women. In collaboration with DocNomads. All films shown with HOH captions. Followed by Filmmaker Q&A (With BSL interpretation) & Live Music. Information Source: IberoDocs | eventbrite

Too hard to breathe – Ventilation, Control, and Resilient Building Design | Glasgow School of Art, Reid Building

Glasgow
Cultural Experiences
Good ventilation is essential for healthy, comfortable, and resilient buildings—but as mechanical systems become more dominant, it's critical to ask: are we designing for long-term wellbeing, or creating new dependencies? This event explores why ventilation matters—not just for compliance or technical performance, but for occupant health, comfort, and the psychological benefits of environmental control. As buildings increasingly rely on mechanical systems, understanding building physics, material choices, and passive design strategies becomes more important than ever. Through case studies and discussion, we’ll demonstrate how to design for indoor air quality while considering flexibility as well as ethics. We’ll look at how passive and natural ventilation, and low-impact construction materials can support both regulatory standards and 'passive survivability'—the ability for buildings to remain safe and comfortable during power outages or emergencies. The session will highlight practical examples from engineering and architectural practice, with a focus on avoiding 'eco-bling' and prioritising real, long-term benefits for occupants. Participants are invited to bring project-specific questions for open discussion. Our speakers: Janice Foster , Chartered Engineer and researcher specialising in building performance evaluation (BPE) at MEARU, GSA. Richard Atkins , Chartered Architect who has designed sustainable buildings and advised clients, government and stakeholders for over 40 years. Sandy Halliday , Chartered Engineer, who has worked in building research, training, policy guidance and as project advisor for local and national government and private clients for over 30 years. Sam Foster , Net Zero Leader at NatureScot, Architect with strong interest in beautiful, low energy architecture constructed from non-toxic materials to create healthy environments. Jessica Noel-Smith , Chartered Architect, Founder of Beyond Access, PhD Researcher at University of Stirling and Associate at Dementia Services Development Centre (DSDC). Discussion will be facilitated by Magdalena Blazusiak , who is the current Vice-chair of SEDA, Chartered Architectural Technologist, lecturer and PhD researcher at RGU, with interest in human centric retrofit supporting health and wellbeing. WHERE: Reid Building, Glasgow Schol of Art, Principal Seminar Room 1 – Ground floor and online WHEN: 18th September at 5.30pm for 6pm start (6pm-8pm) Please let us know your access and dietary requirements. Donation box will be provided for the food and drink. There will also be a Q&A, a Discussion and an opportunity to Network at the event. The event will be hosted in a hybrid format. If attended in person, please ensure to arrive at least 10 minutes before the start. The Zoom call will close after Q&A and discussion. How to get there: Glasgow School of Art, Reid Building 167 Renfrew Street Glasgow, G3 6RQ Public transport: The GSA is about a 20-minute walk from Buchanan Bus Station and Queens Street and Central train stations. The Left And Elections: Learning From The Past, Fighting For The Future Join us for a day of discussion on rebuilding socialist ideas and organisation. With perspectives on Your Party, the movement and the working class toda y. In the first quarter of this century the patterns of political expression and organisation on the radical left have varied. Largley, they have been dominated by mass movements. Here, we can reference the anti-war movement of 2003, and the Palestine solidarity movement today. We have also seen other movements emerge around austerity, Scottish independence and climate change. Within these developments, socialists have played a central role. Alongside these extra-parliamentary campaigns, there have been attempts at utilising political parties as instruments of opposition and resistance. And, to provide an alternative to a failed establishment. These have taken various forms. In Greece, Syriza came to power. In Spain, Podemos became the country's third lasrgest force. And in the UK, the mass movements made a turn towards the Labour Party in the form of Corbynism. Each of these, and other such examples, met structrual challenges which eventuated in their demise. And, within these projects, there are very different conceptions of what is possible, what is desirable, and how best to navigate a volatile era. Today, the process of political fragmentation is intensifying. Reform far outstrip the Tory party in the polls on the radical right. At the same time, the launch of the "Your Party" process by Zara Sultana and Jeremy Corbyn has attracted 900,000 sign-ups, showing an incredible appetite for radical change. This represents a new dynamic in politics, in which the once invincible two party system, is falling apart. In Scotland there are specific dimensions to examine around the national question, and a different set of challenges in relation to the SNP. Moreover, electoral politics opens up a range of questions for socialists, about the relationship between the state, the movement, political parties and the working class today. It is in this context that Counterfire Scotland has arranged this day of discussion. We will assess the problems and challenges bound up with previous electoral initiatives, and look at the some of big questions facing the left today: - From Syriza to Corbynism: What are the key lessons for a new left party? - The state and the system: How can we confront British capitalism? - The working class and the movement today: Strategies for the left - Socialism in Scotland: What kind of organisation do we need? - Theory and practice: Ideological preparation for an era of uncertainty The aftrenoon will be structured around a series of panels and talks, to be released soon. Check back here for updates - or better still - sign up to our substack to be kept up-to-date with all of our meetings and activities. Note: This event is free, with options to pay £5 or a solidarity price of £10 to help us cover costs. Information Source: Counterfire Scotland | eventbrite

As AI agents become more and more prevalent in everyday technology, more and more individuals -- from every walk of life, at every level of education, across the entire socioeconomic spectrum, of every gender, race, ethnicity and age -- will need to make decisions about which agent(s) to use, when and how, and to what extent using them is the best path forward. The "mission" this talk explores is how we can enable such diverse individuals to make such decisions in ways that make their lives better instead of worse. For example, should I use an agent to enable me to be a remote caregiver for my grandmother, or should I move in with her? Should I buy semi-self-driving car X, or semi-self-driving car Y, or stay entirely manual? Will using one of these systems cost someone's life? Will it so destroy someone's privacy that their lives become filled with fear and harassment? Will my child become less intelligent over time if I give her access to LLM-powered "homework helpers"? In this talk, I don't show how to answer any of these questions. But I show a few paths forward that may point to way(s) toward answering them, and at least one path on how not to answer them. Not another cringey networking event! We've all been to them... the awkward, uncomfortable, salesy events where you listen to one scripted elevator pitch after another. The MLM/pyramid scheme folks trying to convince you they can help you make 'six figures in just six months!' The corporate board table powerpoint session, complete with a room full of suits, instant coffee and stale croissants. This is not one of those events. Small Biz, Big Chat is about building a community of female entrepreneurs. It's about real, honest business chat, skill sharing, and non cringey networking (no sleazy sales pitches required). We're a friendly group of women wanting to help other female-owned businesses. It's about proper coffee and delicious cake in a relaxed environment. This is not just another networking event... it's a new community we want YOU to be a part of. Do you feel lonely running your business by yourself? Do you want to meet like-minded business owners? Do you have questions you want to ask other small biz owners? Do you sometimes just want to have a moan about that overdue invoice? This is the place for you. The details: Tickets are £24 / £20 for an early bird You'll get a decent cup of coffee (or tea) & delicious sweet treats Two hours of networking & honest chat with likeminded female founders A presentation / upskilling session with a featured guest speaker (details coming soon!) We run these sessions regularly so you can become part of a supportive community The option to stay for lunch and do a bit of co-working About Small Biz, Big Chat: Meet Rhiannon, Emmelie and Sarah. We're three small business owners. Rhiannon helps women build and grow stand out businesses with brand and content strategy, brand photography and business mentorship. Emmelie is an illustrator who works with female entrepreneurs to create magical, bold and fun branding for their businesses. Sarah is a florist and writer who creates wedding florals and runs floristry workshops. Two of us are mothers so we understand the stresses of juggling childcare, running our businesses and coping with mum guilt. We're all at different stages in our businesses and want nothing more than to grow a community of likeminded female business owners. Follow us on Instagram to keep up to date. Location: The Haberdashery, 545 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, G3 7PQ We chose this venue because it's a small, female-ran, business - everything that SBBC champions! The support artist on the tour is brilliant Aussie singer/songwriter Riley Catherall. Riley supported Fletch on his sellout 2024 tour and was so admired by audiences he was the obvious choice to invite for an encore performance. A night with Fletch and his band is a guaranteed fun night out! IS ALAN FLETCHER A BETTER MUSICIAN THAN DR KARL! Here's what they say. Overall Alan Fletcher delivered a show that surprised in the best possible way. He had a fantastic vocal quality throughout as well as some solid guitar playing, but what elevated the evening for me was the balance he struck between thoughtfulness and fun and the strength of his connection with the crowd. It’s safe to say he’s going to appeal to music fans way beyond just those who know him from ‘Neighbours’ Entertainment-focus.com – Laura Cooney Had the pleasure of meeting Fletch in Worthing this week. A joyful evening of songs old and new. Highly recommended - Andy Dobson What a great night at The Steam and Whistle!! Thank you so much! You were all amazing and so lovely to see you again!! - Emiliana, Hannah and Jason Saw you in Southampton last night and you definitely have a better voice and more talent than Dr Karl !!
