BREAKING GROUND | Oxford University Museum of Natural History
Oct 18, 2024–Sep 29, 2025 (UTC)

Through the expansive finding of fossils and development of new techniques and methods, the 19th century transformed our understanding of the history of Earth. They both helped to establish new scientific methods and ideas, which led to fascinating discoveries in palaeontology, including the first ever dinosaur to be named to science.
Kabuki Legends: Part Two | Oxford
Feb 16, 2024–Feb 23, 2025 (UTC)ENDED
Oxford
Japanese artist Takahashi Hiromitsu creates dynamic, colourful prints showing exciting moments in kabuki, a traditional form of dance-drama. This is the second show in a two-part exhibition of his works in Gallery 29.
Hiromitsu’s striking designs are not portraits of actual actors, but visualisations of famous kabuki roles.
In kabuki, performers wearing elaborate costumes and make-up use stylised movement and song to enact melodramatic stories about love, loyalty and the clash between duty and emotion.

We realise it can be difficult for a goalkeeper to be spotted, and we wanted to give our goalkeepers more opportunities. We have since opened it to all goalkeepers and built great relationships with professional clubs. Since the inception of our trial days two years ago, we've been instrumental in turning the dreams of numerous goalkeepers into reality. Three goalkeepers have been signed by Brighton, two each by Hull City and Reading, and one each by Portsmouth, Barnsley, Bristol City and Oxford United after being spotted at our trial days. The most recent one, Nottingham Forest signed Charlie in October after getting spotted on our trial day. Three of these goalkeepers, like Zach, have been called up to the England setup since signing. One keeper secured a scholarship at Colchester United, and Chelsea Ladies signed a girl after being identified at our trial days. These success stories are a testament to the opportunities we provide, even for those who might have thought their chance had gone. All your child might need this opportunity, and they’ll have a great time doing it! On the trial day, your child can showcase their talent and have lots of fun doing it. Plus, experience playing at some fantastic facilities. What have you got to lose? Sells Pro Training will provide a link between the professional and grassroots game, creating opportunities for students to meet and train with top professional keepers. We will be the first steps in developing the goalkeepers of the future with the aim of creating pathways for other students into coaching, scholarships or a high level of football. Via our close links to the professional game, our goalkeepers will be given a chance to be seen by top clubs. • Professional facilities • Proven results • Professional coaching • Direct contact with professional football clubs • Showcase sessions designed to help you shine • Friendly approach to the day • Feedback to help you develop Premier League Academy Goalkeeping Coach“Having attended Sells residential camps and sessions, I have been very impressed with the level of quality coaching the young goalkeepers receive, as well as the environment which supports learning and enjoyment.“The content of the sessions not only challenges the goalkeepers but also replicates the demands of the modern game.“The attention to detail on all aspects of the camp was tremendous.“The care and support provided for each young goalkeepers, on both a personal and goalkeeping level were second to none.” Under 23 Championship Goalkeeper Coach“Kids smiling and having fun is always the first thing I think of after attending Matt and his team’s events.“The facilities sourced are top class, and the content and learning that goes on is my opinion is excellent.“The environment they create together, with the care and effort they all put into each child is admirable, and I always look forward to attending their events.” Championship Academy Goalkeeping Coach“I just wanted to say a big thank you for having me last night.“It was great to see so many goalkeepers and chat to all the staff, and it looked a fantastic operation.“To see so many goalkeepers flying around as they were shows what a great job you guys are doing!”

Sonny is working on a whaling ship in the South Atlantic, reckoning with the most vicious storms he has ever seen. It's a brutal way to make a living. When he finally returns to his Shetland home to build a life with his wife and young son, the legacy of his time at sea is felt by all of them. In present day Shetland, Jack is an old man, living alone in the cottage where he grew up, in the shadow of a hill. And it is here, one evening, that something appears on his doorstep. Something that throws off the rhythm of his solitary existence in the most profound way. This is a story of unlikely friendship, longing, the power of music and the pull of home. It is about a life revisited - and reimagined. About the author: Malachy Tallack is one of the most exciting and critically acclaimed writers to emerge from Scotland in the past decade, and has won praise from Robert Macfarlane, Bernard MacLaverty, Sara Baume, Madeleine Bunting, Will Self and John Burnside, among others. Ariel Zeleznikow-Johnston 'The Future Loves You' with Nigel Warburton | Blackwell's Bookshop
Dec 4, 2024 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
The Future Loves You: How and Why we should abolish death Just as surgeons once believed pain was good for their patients, some argue today that death brings meaning to life. But given humans rarely live beyond a century - even while certain whales can thrive for over two hundred years - it's hard not to see our biological limits as profoundly unfair. No wonder then that most people nearing death wish they still had more time.
Yet, with ever-advancing science, will the ends of our lives always loom so close? For from ventilators to brain implants, modern medicine has been blurring what it means to die. In a lucid synthesis of current neuroscientific thinking, Zeleznikow-Johnston explains that death is no longer the loss of heartbeat or breath, but of personal identity - that the core of our identities is our minds, and that our minds are encoded in the structure of our brains. On this basis, he explores how recently invented brain preservation techniques now offer us all the chance of preserving our minds to enable our future revival.
Whether they fought for justice or cured diseases, we are grateful to those of our ancestors who helped craft a kinder world - yet they cannot enjoy the fruits of the civilization they helped build. But if we work together to create a better future for our own descendants, we may even have the chance to live in it. Because, should we succeed, then just maybe, the future will love us enough to bring us back and share their world with us. Ariel Zeleznikow-Johnston Dr Ariel Zeleznikow-Johnston is a neuroscientist at Monash University, Australia, where he investigates methods for characterising the nature of conscious experiences. In 2019, he obtained his PhD from The University of Melbourne, where he researched how genetic and environmental factors affect cognition. His research interests range from the decline, preservation and rescue of cognitive function at different stages of the lifespan, through to comparing different people’s conscious experience of colour. Nigel Warburton Nigel Warburton is a public philosopher and author of several books, including the bestselling 'A Little History of Philosophy'. He is also the co-host of the Philosophy Bites podcast alongside David Edmonds. Nigel has been hosting the 'Philosophy in the Bookshop' series of events at Blackwell's since 2013.
