PINTS AND POTTERY with Aaron Scythe | The Dowse Art Museum
Feb 9, 2025 (UTC+12)ENDED
Lower Hutt
Trained in Japanese ceramic styles, Aaron Scythe will lead the workshop, giving tips and tricks on how you can create special take home pieces. Over a brew or two, spend some time learning how Scythe creates his distinctive artworks. This workshop is presented in connection with Whenua Whatu: Māori Ceramics from The Dowse Collection, on at The Dowse until March 2. *Firing not included Aaron Scythe From the late 1990s Scythe lived and worked as a ceramic artist in Japan studying under master craftsperson Professor Koie Ryoji and establishing his own studio and kiln. In 2011 he moved back to Aotearoa with his family following the earthquake and nuclear reactor meltdown at Ōkuma, Fukushima, just north of their home in Mashiko. After a period in the Waikato, Scythe relocated to Wanganui setting up a studio and workshop where he is currently based. While in Japan Scythe was heavily influenced by the Momoyama period (1568-1715) which saw the rise in popularity of the tea ceremony, and the creation and evolution of the many vessels associated with it. This particular work brings together a number of different influences in relation to the construction, firing and decoration of tsubo (traditional vase forms). Yobitsugi (to invite connection) is a technique where multiple vessels are intentionally broken, and the pieces are combined to create a unique new object. In this work, Scythe has employed this technique, alongside his distinctive illustrations, to reflect the relationships he has to both Aotearoa and Japan.

About your instructor -
For over two decades, Phong Tran and his wife have cultivated a coffee culture at Matter of Taste Coffee Bar in Downtown Kitchener. As pioneers in the Waterloo region, they proudly introduced latte art to the region, setting a new standard for coffee aficionados in Ontario.
In the midst of the third wave coffee movement, their passion and dedication were recognized at the barista championships, where they secured second place in their first year of competition. A year later, their talent shone even brighter, claiming both first and second place titles, and earning accolades for best taste in the Toronto Life Magazine latte art edition.
In 2008, Matter of Taste Coffee expanded and established the region's first specialty coffee roaster. Committed to direct trade with farmers and curating exceptional coffee from around the globe, they have fostered a community of coffee enthusiasts and connoisseurs.
Throughout their journey, Phong has trained numerous baristas, many of whom have gone on to become industry professionals, including Q-graders, coffee critics, professional roasters, marketers, and industry representatives.
Phong Tran is very pleased to partner with Conestoga introducing this very first latte art workshop!

Neurodivergent Board Game Speed Dating, Ages 20-40 | Rack House Fitness
May 25, 2025 (UTC-4)ENDED
Woburn
For those who communicate outside the norm—and the people who love them, may we present a speed dating event for the neurodivergent and the people who get it? Introducing: board game speed dating! Designed for neurodivergent minds but welcoming to all who value clear communication, direct vibes, and no awkward guessing games. Over the course of our event, you'll have a chance to discover new games and meet cool single people.
You'll play classics you love and discover brand new ones you've never heard of, playing each with a different group of fun singles. At the end of the night, you give your gaming concierge a list of the folks you met that you'd like to date and a list of those you met that you'd like to just hang out with as friends. If any two people put down the same name as each other in either column, then your gaming concierge will make sure you get each other's e-mail address and you can coordinate a time to hang out.
Our event will also feature a brief presentation from Sarah and Tandis at Connecting Us in the beginning, giving tips on how to connect. Then we'll hop into games.
Before you decide to buy tickets, a few basics we should cover:
1) All games played will be group games, giving people a chance to interact at a table full of fellow game lovers, rather than in the 1:1 format of conventional speed dating.
2) You'll see tickets sold for men or women, our men's tickets are generally for people who feel a connection to the identity of “man” and are interested in dating women, while our women's tickets are for people who feel a connection to the identity of “woman” and are interested in dating men. Gender nonconforming folks and any others who feel this event would be a fit for them are absolutely welcome.
3) Water, sodas and snacks will be there for all to enjoy. Registrants are free to BYOB if they so desire.
4) Refunds are only available to those who cancel with more than 48 hours' notice, in order to make sure we have enough time to find a replacement for you and keep the event well-populated.
Okay, that's all you need to know, so don't wait any longer. Grab your ticket and we'll see you there. Game on!
