San Francisco
Exhibitions
Table Manners brings together tableware, flatware, and drinkware from the SFMOMA Architecture + Design collection spanning nearly 100 years. The exhibition celebrates the ways design has shaped our relationship to food, our bodies, and communities, and how dining can be a profound communal and cultural experience. From self-filling wine glasses and teapots made of tea, to crisp modernist spoons and flatware made from discarded CDs, Table Manners explores the performance of dining. The exhibition includes works by Virgil Abloh, Joe Colombo, Zaha Hadid, Roberto Lugo, and many more, accompanied by illustrations and textiles by Lucy Stark.

Exhibitions
Hawks, pheasants, ducks, quail, egrets, and other birds appear frequently in Japanese paintings. With roots in the Chinese “bird and flower” genre, some are traditionally associated with a particular season or sentiment; others were chosen by artists and patrons simply for their beauty. The paintings currently on view in the Tateuchi Japanese Galleries use birds as both decorations and symbols, representing the seasons, strength, longevity, fidelity, or good fortune. They include decorative rimpa-style paintings; large, Kano-style screen paintings; and intimate hanging scrolls decorated in ink and faint colors.

Shinoda Toko: Abstract Calligraphy | Asian Art Museum

San Francisco
Exhibitions
A trailblazer in 20th-century Japanese calligraphy, Shinoda Toko (1913–2021) reshaped the art of ink abstraction with her distinctive and dynamic style. Shinoda studied traditional calligraphy but soon rejected the practice of copying past masters, likening it to “creating a fake.” A calligrapher at heart, Shinoda preferred lithography over woodblock printing, as it allowed her to directly apply her brushwork to the plate, capturing the nuances of each stroke. As she transitioned from painting legible Chinese characters toward avant-garde abstraction, Shinoda initially faced resistance in Japan and moved to New York in 1956. “I wanted to see how my works would be received in a foreign country,” she later recalled, “where letters are not read as letters.” Throughout her 107-year lifetime, the artist consistently sought her own vision of beauty, free from the confines of tradition.
Ruth Asawa Retrospective | San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Ruth Asawa Retrospective | San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Apr 5–Sep 2, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Exhibitions
Nearly 12 years after her death, SFMOMA is presenting the first major national and international retrospective of Ruth Asawa’s work, a groundbreaking artist whose work is fully explored in her work. Born in California in 1926, Asawa was forcibly sent to an internment camp during World War II because of her Japanese descent. After her release, she attended Black Mountain College in North Carolina and began a prolific career that spanned six decades, spanning a variety of media from painting to sculpture, often drawing on organic forms and reflecting her deep affection for nature. The exhibition will feature 300 of Asawa’s works in chronological order, with her signature hanging, looping wire sculptures—known for their “form within a form” constructions—taking a prominent place. The exhibition will also highlight her contributions to art education and public sculpture. In particular, a specially curated gallery will recreate Asawa’s home and studio in San Francisco’s Noe Valley, offering a glimpse into her family life and creative inspirations. The exhibition will feature her sketchbooks and experiments with materials such as copper, ceramic, electroplating and bronze, as well as the original hand-carved mahogany door of her former home and works by artists she admired, such as Josef Albers, Ray Johnson, Peggy Tolk-Watkins and Marguerite Wildenhain.

Jul 26, 2025–Jul 5, 2026 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Exhibitions
Exploring moments from the rich history of the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) — before its closure, the West Coast’s oldest fine art school — this exhibition spotlights works by more than 50 SFAI alumni and former faculty included in the museum’s collection. The presentation underscores the school’s crucial role in fostering creativity and experimentation, featuring works across media since the post–World War II era by artists like Ansel Adams, Joan Brown, Miguel Calderón, Imogen Cunningham, Mike Henderson, Candice Lin, and Carlos Villa, among others. The exhibition also includes a dynamic and quirky range of archival materials drawn from the SFMOMA Library and the SFAI Archive. These encompass ephemera from the founding of the school’s photography department, posters for 1950s Beat-era galleries run by artist alumni, student newspapers, and flyers from the punk and new wave music scenes of the 1970s. Taking its title from a line in the final 2022 commencement speech by faculty member and alumnus Dewey Crumpler, People Make This Place is a collaborative effort across the museum in partnership with the SFAI Legacy Foundation + Archive.

Vikrant Bhise: Archival Historicity/Dalit Panthers | Asian Art Museum

Vikrant Bhise: Archival Historicity/Dalit Panthers | Asian Art Museum

Apr 3, 2025–May 23, 2026 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Exhibitions
Filled with a revolutionary spirit, Vikrant Bhise’s Archival Historicity series offers a dynamic visual archive of the Dalit Panthers, a group dedicated to seeking freedom from caste, gender, and labor inequities for India’s most oppressed and marginalized peoples. Founded in 1972 in Mumbai and taking inspiration from the Oakland-based Black Panther Party for Self Defense, the Dalit Panthers sought to align themselves with their Bay Area counterparts in a global struggle for equality and social change. Bhise’s intimate, postcard-sized works are made up of many layers: painted and printed elements from manifestos and pamphlets interact and overlap with newspaper images, urban monuments, and symbolic cartoons. Installed in a continuous sequence spanning a gallery wall, these selections from the ongoing series “evoke the small, localized experiences that add up to global movements, while underscoring the enduring significance of the Panthers’ call for equality,” says Padma Dorje Maitland, Malavalli Family Foundation Associate Curator of the Art of the Indian Subcontinent. This exhibition marks their first showing in a major museum.
Gurjeet Singh: When Words Hurt | Asian Art Museum

Gurjeet Singh: When Words Hurt | Asian Art Museum

Apr 3, 2025–Mar 23, 2026 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Exhibitions
Chandigarh-based artist Gurjeet Singh’s first show at an American institution offers a moving consideration of the emotional impact of words. Teary Eyes is a soft sculpture stitched together from pieces of dress fabric. Despite a playful, colorful surface, the work conveys a deep vulnerability; this feeling grows deeper as we witness a violent exchange of words in the painting Prickly Words. Portraits of Singh with the figure further personalize the exhibition. “These works explore what it means to be seen, to express yourself, and the power of language to build us up and tear us down,” says exhibition curator Padma Dorje Maitland, Malavalli Family Foundation Associate Curator of the Art of the Indian Subcontinent. “Even if we accept ourselves and feel confident, the wrong word at the wrong time can deeply impact us. Whether Sikh, South Asian, Queer, soft, or hard, Singh’s work addresses the complex challenges of fashioning how we appear in the world.”
Kunié Sugiura: Photopainting | San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Kunié Sugiura: Photopainting | San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

Apr 26–Sep 14, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Exhibitions
This exhibition is the first US survey of the work of Kunié Sugiura, an artist whose boundary-defying engagement with the photographic medium spans over sixty years. Born in Nagoya, Japan, in 1942, Sugiura came to the United States in 1963 to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she majored in photography. After graduation, she relocated to New York and has lived there ever since. Sugiura’s practice embraces a hybrid approach, blending various mediums and expressing her bicultural identity. The balancing of dualisms —Japanese/American, organic/human-made, and painting/photography — defines her work. Sugiura has stated that her cross-fertilization of photography with painting and sculpture partly stems from her desire that photography be taken seriously as an art form.

Tradition and Innovation: Contemporary Korean Ceramics | Asian Art Museum

May 8–Dec 1, 2025 (UTC-8)
San Francisco
Exhibitions
Offering a rare chance to see contemporary Korean ceramics from the museum collection, this exhibition highlights clay creations by four prominent 20th-century artists. Their various approaches, each one an heir to its own creative lineage, demonstrate innovations deeply rooted in Korea’s rich legacy of ceramics production. On one side, the lively surface textures of stoneware and porcelain works by Roe Kyung-Jo (b. 1951), Kim See-man (b.1958), and Yoon Kwang-jo (b. 1946) bring fresh updates to traditional marbling and glazing techniques. Exhibition curator and Assistant Curator for Korean Art Yoon-Jee Choi notes that “buncheong (분청), the central decoration of Kim and Yoon’s vessels, is one of the most innovative techniques of Korean ceramics; the two artists advance this traditional method by exploring a sense of rhythm and spontaneity.” Directly opposite are three smooth, black pillars of stacked onggi (옹기) — vessels historically used to carry fermented foods such as kimchi — by Cho Chung-Hyun (b. 1940). Standing as tall as people, each of these appealing works seems animated by its own unique personality, conveyed via subtle variations in shape and size.

** FOR SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA AREA SINGLES ** Get ready for a fun night at this revolutionary new event that's the best way to meet other singles in your area from the comfort of your own home on Zoom. Grab some snacks or even a cocktail and come try out the event that's being called, "A fun new twist on speed dating!". Let's face it, we're all tired of the endless swiping on dating apps and interacting with people who may or may not look like or be like the person they're portraying on the apps. A Dating Games Online Speed Dating Game Night is a much better way to meet someone because you actually get to interact with people on video (Zoom) before committing to a real life date. This is the safest and best way to meet someone! Our friendly host will welcome everyone and then you'll be put into breakout rooms where you'll get to meet, chat with and play fun social games with the other singles in attendance. At the end of the event you'll be able to select people you'd like to stay in touch with (the matching works similar to traditional speed dating... we explain the matching in more detail below). Find out why this event has been called, "The best way to meet quality singles in the modern age". No more endless swiping on dating apps! WE DO THESE EVENTS EVERY FEW WEEKS OR SO AND WE SLIGHTLY CHANGE UP THE AGE RANGE FOR EACH EVENT. CHECK OUR UPCOMING SCHEDULE BELOW TO SEE THE AGE RANGES FOR EACH EVENT DATE. THE AGE RANGES ARE ONLY SUGGESTED MEANING THAT IF YOU'RE WITHIN A FEW YEARS OF THE AGE RANGE YOU'RE WELCOME TO ATTEND. *********************************************** *********************************************** SCHEDULE: TUESDAY MARCH 18 - SUGGESTED AGE RANGE: AGES 20s, 30s & 40s TUESDAY APRIL 22 - SUGGESTED AGE RANGE: 30s & 40s TUESDAY MAY 13 - SUGGESTED AGE RANGE: 30s, 40s & 50s TUESDAY JUNE 17 - SUGGESTED AGE RANGE: 30s & 40s TUESDAY JULY 8 - SUGGESTED AGE RANGE: 20s, 30s & 40s TUESDAY AUGUST 5 - SUGGESTED AGE RANGE: 26 to 39 TUESDAY AUGUST 12 - SUGGESTED AGE RANGE: 20s & 30s TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 2 - SUGGESTED AGE RANGE: 30 to 44 TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 30 - SUGGESTED AGE RANGE: 20s, 30s & 40s TUESDAY OCTOBER 7 - SUGGESTED AGE RANGE: 30s, 40s & 50s *********************************************** *********************************************** QUICK NOTE - WE WILL ALSO HAVE SOME SINGLES FROM A FEW OTHER NEARBY CALIFORNIA CITIES IN ATTENDANCE TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE A NICE BIG CROWD AND A MORE FUN EVENT BUT WE WILL MAKE SURE YOU MEET EVERYONE FROM YOUR CITY AND WE WILL HAVE PLENTY OF PEOPLE FROM YOUR CITY ATTENDING. WHAT IS THIS EVENT ALL ABOUT? This is entirely new and revolutionary type of event for singles! We love the idea of traditional speed dating but sometimes it's hard to come up with things to talk about. That's why at a Dating Games Online Speed Dating Game Night you'll have fun, easy games to play to get to know everyone instead of dealing with the usual dating "job interview" type questions. We find that it's a much better way to get to know someone! You'll be put in Zoom breakout rooms with a small group of singles and you'll play games that will help you get to know each other. Some rounds you may be with small groups of 4 to 7 people and some rounds you may be 1 on 1 with someone of the opposite gender much like traditional speed dating. Essentially, you'll work with the other people as a team and compare answers with the other teams. Each round we change up the teams to make sure you get to meet and get to know everyone in attendance (we explain the games in more detail below). HOW THE MATCHING WORKS: Similar to traditional speed dating, at the end of the event the host will explain how you can keep in contact with anyone that you are interested in seeing again. We allow people to match as "friends" so you can meet wingmen and/or wingwomen at this event and we also allow people to match with people as potential love interests whom they'd like to see again for future dates. AN EMAIL WE RECENTLY RECEIVED: I wanted to write to thank you for putting on such a a great event. I attended the speed dating game night last week and it was so much fun! I wanted a change up from the dating apps and this event hit was exactly what I hoped for. Your host was so nice and welcoming. I met a lot of people and everyone was really friendly. I am staying in touch with a few people from the event and actually set up a date for this upcoming weekend with one of the guys I met during the event. Once again, just want to thank you for holding such a quality event! - Laura WHAT KIND OF GAMES WILL WE BE PLAYING? The fun games are set up to break the ice, help you gauge compatibility, make quality connections and to have a really fun night. An example game we like to play is "Dating Feud" which is similar to the popular prime time TV show we all know. In this game you and your group will be asked fun relationship style questions like, "Name a gift that women love men to give them". You will work together with a small group of singles to come up with what you think is the most popular answer and then you'll find out if you got the top answer. Another game we might play is called Blank Slate. In Blank Slate the host will show you a word followed by a blank. For example: Chicken _________. You'll write down a word that follows the word Chicken such as "Soup". Essentially you're trying to predict what will be a popular answer. We do different fun games at each event we throw! Another game we play is "Would You Rather" where we ask you fun questions like "Would you rather live the rest of your life without ever being able to watch a movie ever again or would you rather never be able to listen to any song/music again?". You answer the question and then you have to try and pick the most popular answer. You're then brought back from the breakout room into the main room to hear how everyone else answered the question. It's so much fun! Thousands of people have met at our events and we've witnessed countless relationships and friendships formed. In fact, because you really get to know people during the games, the chances of meeting someone at a Dating Games Online Speed Dating Game Night are much higher than online dating apps or traditional speed dating events. MORE DETAILS: * Once you sign up, you'll be given a link to join a group of other people via video on Zoom. All you need is a laptop, phone or tablet to take part in the event. You'll enjoy an evening of meeting new people, fun social interactions and games. Our friendly host will be with you live via video orchestrating the event and even making introductions among the group so you'll get to know the other people attending. It's so much fun! ************************* WE ALSO HAVE DIFFERENT THEMED EVENTS FOR SAN FRANCISCO SINGLES ON DIFFERENT DATES THAT YOU CAN CHECK OUT AT THIS LINK: https://friendzyevents.com/calendar.html : ************************* WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT THE EVENT: "As a busy professional, I just don't have time to get out and meet people as much as I'd like so this event was like a Godsend for me. It was a refreshingly fantastic experience." - Jennifer S. "What a fabulous concept. I met some great people and I started dating someone I met at the event." - Hannah M. "That was an absolute blast!" - Jonathan T. "The games are the perfect way to tell if you have chemistry with the other people." - Emma D. WHY THIS EVENT WORKS! For many years we organized in person traditional speed dating events. While waiting for everyone to show up, the host would do some icebreaker style games to "Kill time" until everyone arrived. We noticed something fascinating begin to happen. People got to know each other better and made more connections during the games than they did during the actual speed dating rounds! The games sparked so much conversation and laughs that we thought, "Wow, we should make an entire event like this!". And that is how our Dating Games Online Speed Dating Game Night events were born. QUICK NOTE: THESE EVENTS WILL LIKELY SELL OUT BY EVENT TIME AND WE HAVE LIMITED SPOTS AVAILABLE AT EACH EVENT SO GRAB YOUR TICKET ASAP! FAQ: HOW MANY WILL BE PARTICIPATING? We expect a total of about 25 people to attend each event. IF I ATTENDED A PAST DATING GAMES ONLINE SPEED DATING GAME NIGHT, CAN I SIGN UP FOR THIS ONE? Yes, In fact we never use repeat questions and we always change up the games so feel free to sign up with as many of our upcoming events as you'd like and meet more people! HOW DO I JOIN THE EVENT? After you sign up on to Eventbrite we will send you a Zoom link with an invitation to join the event. We'll email you that link by the day of the event. If for some reason you don't see an email from us by the event date, make sure to check your spam folder in case it ended up there by accident. WHAT DO I NEED TO ATTEND? All you need is your computer or your smart phone or tablet (Computer or tablet is recommended over a phone) HOW STRICT IS THE LISTED AGE RANGE? The age range listed is a suggestion. If you're within a few of years older or younger than the listed age range, you're welcome to attend. IS THERE A REFUND POLICY? If you need to cancel, please email us and we can transfer you to a future event. However we do not offer transfers if you cancel on the day of the event or don't show up. Where are there articulations of homesickness for heaven in our culture? Come join us for an engaging lecture, with poet, author, and PhD candidate in Theological Aesthetics, Evan R. Underbrink , which will explore media ranging from films to video games to identify articulations of heaven in our culture, media includes The Good Place (2016-2020), Constantine (2005), Rick and Morty (2013-), The Shack (2017), Doom Eternal (2020), and many more. In our world today, “heaven” is one of the most creatively open topics for writers to explore. From a Catholic-Christian academic and writer’s perspective, this talk considers how we can evaluate these secular representations of heaven and connect the rich wealth of the church tradition as it has written on eschatology. Get ready for a talk that ranges from popular TV shows and video games to medieval poetry, prompting us to think more clearly, contemplate deeply, and write more thoughtfully about what heaven looks like in our art and literature. RSVP is appreciated, as space is limited, so we can plan accordingly. Parking is available on site, and refreshments will be provided. *Donations are much appreciated for the refreshments and the volunteer team's efforts. Information Source: SF Art Forum | eventbrite

Someone who shares your passions and interests - from sports to yoga - all in a setting just your speed. - Upon registration, you'll be sent an email inviting you to login to your mobile MyCheekyDate ‘Smart-Card’.
