Part of a broader cultural phenomenon that came to be known as “Japonisme,” artists such as Félix Bracquemond, Ernest Chaplet, Théodore Deck, François Laurin, and Albert-Louis Dammouse incorporated subjects, decorations, and forms inspired by Japanese art into their ceramics while also experimenting with new techniques like barbotine (a method of decorating ceramics with colored clay slips) and glazes imitating highly prized examples of East Asian ceramics.

Crescendo: How Art Makes Movements (1981–1999) is a historical survey of multidisciplinary art projects that intersected with Asian American social movements between 1981 and 1999. This exhibition will explore the theme of diversity by comparing mythical creatures from different cultures. While these fantastical animals may look different, they serve a similar purpose – to help humans make sense of the world. On view in Gallery 339 will be classic Chinese legendary mythical creatures—the dragon, phoenix and qilin—juxtaposed with collection highlights from Japan, Korea, South and Southeast Asia, as well as Persia and Western Europe, to show the diversity of mythical creatures throughout the world, as well as their similarities and differences. Elaborately embroidered costumes and silver headdresses created by Miao, Yi and other minority peoples decorated with dragons, phoenixes, and creatures relating to origin myths will be on display in Gallery 326. In a third space (Gallery 321) Chinese contemporary works of mythical creatures by artists Xu Bing and Ai Weiwei show how the past continues to inform art today.

With an approach to functional design that prioritizes ease of use, aesthetic simplicity, and close attention to the ways that mundane objects and environments record our everyday habits, Tokyo-based product designer Naoto Fukasawa has been a hugely influential force in design for more than two decades. Best-known for his prior work as design director of MUJI—the Japanese “anti-brand” consumer goods company—Fukasawa has designed across a broad range of categories and media. Whether shaping electronics for a global market or collaborating with artisanal firms on fine furniture, Fukasawa advocates for a design philosophy of longevity, accessibility, and subtle humor over novelty, ephemerality, or blatant commercialism.

How might an artist puncture a culture of silence? When political debates are fraught, might saying less allow one to say more? The works gathered together for this exhibition find poetic ways to probe the histories and state of this nation, without asserting a fixed political view. The title is borrowed from the Jewish Romanian poet Paul Celan. After his family were killed in the Holocaust, he moved to Paris but continued to write in German, developing a surreal, enigmatic voice that circles around the question of how to broach the unspeakable.

This exhibition, the largest of Christina Ramberg’s work to date, will illuminate the artist’s encyclopedia of imagery exploring experiences of gender, sexuality, and normative ideals of female beauty. Born in 1946, Ramberg has tended to be associated with the Chicago Imagists, a loose fellowship of artists in the mid-1960s who made vibrant work inspired by popular culture, from comic books to low-budget films and store-front displays. However, her exquisitely detailed, kinky aesthetic has always set her apart. Ramberg consistently worked in pursuit of a “coherent visual statement”, honing in on feminized aspects of the body and its erotic trappings: hairstyles, hands, corsets, shoes.

Photography is often thought of as a means to capture the fleeting occurrences and unpredictable juxtapositions of the visual world. But what happens when photographers choose to work within a single enclosed space, exercising near-complete control over everything that happens in front of their lens? Although this premise may sound limiting, artists have long used the blank slate of the studio to create an endless variety of moving, dynamic, and daring images.
