Mainie Jellett and Evie Hone. The Art of Friendship | National Gallery of Ireland

Apr 10–Aug 10, 2025 (UTC)
Dublin
Exhibitions
Our major spring-summer exhibition is dedicated to the pioneering Irish modernists Mainie Jellett and Evie Hone, and brings together 90 of their works of art. It explores their friendship and shared experiences while studying in Paris during the early 1920s, and traces their careers back to Ireland. The exhibition highlights the early convergences and later divergences in their styles as they developed distinct artistic voices. Featuring paintings, stained glass, and preparatory drawings, it reveals how both women were trailblazers in Irish art although remaining connected to conventional themes such as religion and landscape.

An Artist’s Presence explores how artists, consciously or unconsciously, have placed themselves in their work through drawings and paintings from the Gallery’s permanent collection. Spanning the eighteenth to the twenty-first century, it includes works of art by artists as diverse as William Orpen, Elisabeth Vigée-Le Brun, James Barry, Flora Mitchell, Seán Keating and Nancy Lee Katz. Featuring self-portraits, depictions of artists in the act of making, and works that emphasise the stylistic signature of their creator, this exhibition offers a fascinating insight into the artistic process. This exhibition invites visitors to consider the relationship between the artist, their art, their presence, and the viewer.

Arts Literary Arts
Join us on May 3 at the Bewley's Cafe Theatre, where KEITH DONALD will be performing a version of his one-man play NEWBLISS. There will be music, a Q&A, and Keith will also be signing copies of his memoir MUSIC AND MAYHEM, published in March by the Lilliput Press. Doors open at 7PM. Show starts at 7.30PM. ABOUT THE BOOK: MUSIC AND MAYHEM charts the immersive and explosive life of KEITH DONALD, one of Ireland’s most important musicians, plus the golden decade of Irish music that he was at the very centre of. In a career that has spanned over five decades, Keith has played on over eighty albums and worked with artists including VAN MORRISON, CHRISTY MOORE, RONNIE DREW and LOUIS STEWART, among many others. His story begins in Unionist east Belfast, hurtling through vivid memories of a childhood as a musical prodigy, first performing at the BBC aged ten. His story takes him to the classics department of Trinity College Dublin in the early sixties, a hotbed of new ideas, before he becomes enveloped in the beauty of tenor sax. The seventies saw Keith building a music career in Dublin and Europe, coping with addiction, a crumbling marriage, and forging a separate life as a qualified social worker. It was the 1980s however, when his greatest breakthrough came to pass with the formation of the Celtic rock supergroup MOVING HEARTS. With the Hearts, Keith was tour manager, star performer and inspiration, alongside bandmates including CHRISTY MOORE and DONAL LUNNY. Their combined fusion of jazz, rock and traditional music created the soundtrack of an era and paved the way for a generation of Irish musicians. ABOUT NEWBLISS: NewBliss was written during 2014 and is a one-man show consisting of verse, prose and music. Keith’s journey from addiction to redemption is an inspirational story, complete with both laughter and lessons. In the show, Keith recounts the highs and lows of his six-decade long career, half of which was spent under the shadow of alcoholism. It is an insight into the life of a musician, from pit orchestra gigs to pay the bills, all the way through to sold out stadium tours. Information Source: The Lilliput Press | eventbrite

About Stéphane Kyndt Stéphane Kyndt is a professional photographer since 1997. Initially traversing paths in business and psychology, Stéphane's pivot towards photography was a revelation. Through self-teaching and relentless practice, he honed his skills, delving deep into the intricacies of framing, technique, and storytelling. Over time, he forged a distinctive photographic style characterized by its humanistic ethos, rich colors, warmth, and an unwaveringly positive outlook on life.
Sté Kyndt's odyssey led him across continents, where he spent a decade in Los Angeles , serving as a photo correspondent specializing in celebrity photography. Yet, Stéphane's wanderlust was far from satisfied. He returned to his homeland, France, only to continue his globetrotting adventures. His work has taken him across the globe, from Madagascar to Colombia, from Morocco to Uruguay and in many other countries in Europe.
His photographic expeditions, often centered on documentary and street photography, serve as poignant testimonies to the human condition and the myriad facets of culture and society. Each frame tells a story, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the narrative woven by light and shadow, color and contrast. Reflecting on his journey, Sté Kyndt muses, There is magic in photography, and this magic does not fade with time, quite the contrary... It’s the eternity of yesterday.

Last year, this talk packed the room with cyclists looking for real solutions to nagging injuries, tight muscles, and frustrating setbacks. The feedback was overwhelming—riders finally understood why their bodies weren’t cooperating and, more importantly, how to fix it. This year, we’re taking it even further. You love riding—pushing your limits on the road, tearing down trails, or grinding through tough climbs. But what happens when an old injury or a lingering ache holds you back? You feel it every ride—maybe it’s a stiff lower back, a knee that never quite healed, or that deep muscle tightness that never fully goes away. You cross your fingers, hope for the best, and set out… only to find yourself holding back, coasting home early, or worse—sidelined again. What if just ten minutes of targeted work before your ride could be the difference between another frustrating setback and riding at your peak? In this Cycle Superstore Talk Series workshop, I’ll show you exactly why your body keeps breaking down—and how to fix it. Neuromscular Therapist Jason Kehoe specialises in treating injuries that have lingered for years, even decades, with great success. If you've been told it's just part of getting older or nothing can be done, Jason is here to to prove otherwise. Whether you’re dealing with recurring crashes, overuse injuries, or chronic pain that no treatment has solved, you’ll walk away from this session with real, practical techniques that you can apply immediately and ask pressing questions about your own situation. We'll cover: Why your muscles keep tightening up—and how to reset themThe 10-minute pre-ride routine that can change everythingThe right way to use foam rollers and massage balls (most get this wrong)How to bulletproof your body against common cycling injuriesSecrets to fixing long-term aches and pains you thought were permanentLast year’s event proved just how much riders are struggling with injuries that hold them back. This year, we’re diving deeper and making sure you leave with a plan that works. This event is FREE—but pre-registration is required. Information Source: Cycle Superstore | eventbrite

In May 1967, they released their debut album, Electric Music For The Mind & Body . It was a chart success and stil consistently charting in lists of the top psychedelic albums ever made. It's never been out of print. In 1967 - the “Summer of Love” - Country Joe and the Fish played the Monterey Pop Festival with such luminaries as The Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother & The Holding Compan (with Janis Joplin), The Mamas and Papas, Otis Redding, Ravi Shankar, Simon and Garfunkel, The Steve Miller Band, The Who and Jimi Hendrix. After a superb performance (check out D.A.Pennebaker's film Monterey Pop ) Country Joe & The Fish were in great demand, and toured arenas, concert halls, and stadiums throughout Europe and North America. Theirmost famous appearance was at 1969's historic Woodstock Festival, before half a million people. where part of their performance was immortalised in the film of the same name. Country Joe and the Fish split up in 1971, but occasionally regrouped to play together. In 1976 they shared the bill with Bob Marley and The Wailers at a stadium gig in Cardiff, Wales. They released two reunion albums in 1977 and 1994. Since then Country Joe McDonald retired and two other members died. Only Barry Melton and keyboard player David Bennett Cohen are now still active After Country Joe and The Fish split, Barry released a series of excellent solo albums, and also recorded with top Welsh rockers Man at Rockfield Studios in Wales, and toured with them on many occasions. He then put together San Francisco’s historic supergroup, Dinosaurs, which also featured John Cipollina (Quicksilver Messenger Service) on 2nd lead guitar, Spencer Dryden (Jefferson Airplane) on drums, Peter Albin (Big Brother and the Holding Company) on bass guitar and Robert Hunter (songwriter for The Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan collaborator) on rhythm guitar. Canadian born singer & guitarist Natalie Martel is a recording artiste in her own right and well known in the San Francisco area, where she has lived for many years, initially with the late John Cipollina (Quicksilver Messenger Service).
