Out of the Crate | Manchester Art Gallery

Manchester
Exhibitions
Come and look behind the scenes of Manchester’s publicly owned sculpture collection. Part exhibition, part research space, Out of the Crate delves into the un-tapped history of the collection. This is an opportunity to investigate sculpture through access to stored collections and archival material. Find out what’s in store and how we look after it, help unlock hidden stories about works we know very little about and explore how artworks might encourage conversation. We have about 400 sculptures from antiquity to the present day and, until recently, less than 5% were on display. As well as modern and contemporary works, there are 19th-century sculptures and works from earlier periods that have rarely been seen this century and are under-researched. On display are a large range of materials including marble, bronze, wood, glass, ceramic and paper, a variety of sizes and shapes and different techniques of making. From bronze medals decorated with reliefs to large-scale free-standing 3D works, you can now see around 30% of the sculpture collection here. In terms of representation, we should also consider who has and hasn’t been included in the collection.

Exhibitions
A Riot In Three Acts is a large-scale installation using the tropes and techniques of cinema, in the form of an expansive film set and cinematic score, to consider riots and civil uprisings that have occurred in response to systemic injustice experienced by marginalised communities. The exhibition provides a stage for the complex narratives that accompany such collective actions directed against the state, often spurred by racist policing, social deprivation, youth disenfranchisement and anti-war sentiment.Originally commissioned by and developed in residence at Somerset House Studios in London, the work evolves from Perretta’s experience as a young person during the UK riots in 2011. Initially a response to police violence in London, the riots became a national uprising brought on by an age of endless austerity, quickly spreading to Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham and beyond.

Concerts Folk
Under white noise and digital chatter, an ancient planetary pull… It’s late spring when the evenings are starting to glow. On the horizon, the longest day of the year. Put the world on pause and lose yourself in a sound world where earthy Celtic folk flows into lively improvisations and brave, experimental new music. Sisters Rakhi and Simmy Singh spent their early years in the Welsh countryside, immersed in a blend of traditional Indian music, Western classical and folk. Now, they thread together these diverse influences in this intimate performance for violin duo and electronics, drawing us into the mysterious rhythms of the natural world.  Nature may be a source of healing and inspiration, but our relationship with it is both precious and extremely fragile. ‘No One Is Too Small To Make A Difference’ is a journey in six parts, capturing the urgency of the environmental movement. Not just a lament for what’s lost, but ultimately a call for active hope and radical action. The great turning is here and now – there’s no escaping it. manchestercollective.co.uk/turning Timings 6.30pm Doors open 7.30pm Show starts 9.10pm Show ends The show includes a 20-minute interval. We are thrilled to partner with the University of Manchester's Centre for New Writing to welcome Rowe Irvin and Gurnaik Johal to the shop to discuss their stunning debut novels LIFE CYCLE OF A MOTH and SARASWATI. The authors will be in conversation with Kaye Mitchell. Doors: 6.30pm, starts: 6.45pm Tickets are £4. Admission is free when purchasing a copy the book. About LIFE CYCLE OF A MOTH: Maya and Daughter live in complete isolation in a secluded woodland, their days aligned with the light and changing seasons, a complex pattern of routine and ritual. Daughter has never questioned the life her mother has chosen for them; the life that has meant she's never met another soul, or known anywhere except their forest home. But one day, when Daughter is almost sixteen, a red-haired stranger steps into the confines of their territory. Where there was always two, suddenly there are three - and the carefully constructed world that Maya has built to keep her daughter safe may not survive it. About SARASWATI: Centuries ago, the holy river Saraswati flowed through what is now Punjab. Many dismiss this as myth, but when Satnam arrives in his ancestral village for his grandmother's funeral, he finds water in the dried-up well behind her house. The discovery sets in motion a contentious scheme to unearth the lost river as an act of Hindu nationalist pride. The river changes the course of Satnam's life, and those of six others. As legends and histories resurface, the distant relatives - from a Canadian eco-saboteur to a Mauritian pest exterminator to a Bollywood stunt double - are brought together in a rapidly changing India. Ambitious, moving and brimming with folklore, Saraswati is a tour de force from one of Britain's most feted young writers. About the authors: Rowe Irvin ’s writing has been published by Prototype, Dancing Bear Books, the Oxford Review of Books and the Bristol Poetry Institute. She recently released an artist’s book limited edition of narrative poems in collaboration with the painter Georg Wilson. She has been shortlisted for the Bridport Poetry Prize and the Bath Short Story Award, and longlisted for the Alpine Fellowship Writing Prize, the Fish Anthology Poetry Prize and the Bath Flash Fiction Award. Gurnaik Johal is a writer from West London born in 1998. His 2022 collection We Move won the Somerset Maugham Award and the Tata Literature Live! Prize. Its opening story won the Galley Beggar Short Story Prize. Saraswati is his debut novel. If you cannot make the event but would like a dedicated copy of one of the books, please email events.manchester@blackwell.co.uk or call us on 0161 274 3331. Our event format is usually a 45 minute discussion between the author and interviewer, followed by a chance for audience members to ask questions. There will be the opportunity to get your book signed/dedicated after the event. Events are a brilliant opportunity to discover new books, meet authors and likeminded readers and learn something new. Get involved in the discussions to move past the ‘why’ and on to the ‘how’. Shifting from demolition to deconstruction and towards large-scale reuse is a big part of the construction industry’s game plan to maximise finite resources, reduce carbon emissions and minimise waste. Join us and participate in insightful conversations that address the challenges and opportunities in the reclamation and reuse of building products and materials. Share experiences with other disciplines in the industry to better understand how we can move the dial on deconstruction. Hear from practitioners currently leading the way in reuse, with presentations, compelling case studies, and dynamic Q&A sessions. By subscribing to this event you will be added to our mailing list so you can keep up-to-date with our latest news and upcoming events. View privacy policy https://asbp.org.uk/privacy-policy Thank you to our campaign sponsors - Cleveland Steel & Tubes , Optima , Circuland , EME , Reusefully , and Woodknowledge Wales . About the Reuse Now Campaign: The construction industry accounts for over a third of global carbon emissions and produces around 60 million tonnes of construction and demolition waste annually in the UK. Whilst much of this is recovered and recycled, only a small percentage is reused. This creates a significant opportunity to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint, minimise waste and deliver cost efficiencies. Estimates suggest that by increasing our reuse of construction products, 22.3 MtCO2e of GHG emissions could be saved during the UK’s fourth and fifth carbon budgets between 2023 and 2034. The “Reuse Now” Campaign aims to drive change in the built environment sector by: Raising Awareness across the supply chain about the significant environmental benefits of reusing building products, including waste reduction, carbon reduction and economic benefits. Sharing Knowledge through practical, interactive workshops, events, and online resources. Fostering Collaboration with stakeholders from across industry to build a robust knowledge sharing network that ensures the availability and accessibility of high-quality reused products. Showcasing Success Stories that have successfully embraced reused building products and prove that lower carbon supply chain models not only benefit the environment but can also offer economic advantages and innovative design possibilities. Deansgate welcomes crime powerhouses Michael Connelly and Mark Billingam to Manchester Central Library, in celebration of their respective new releases: Nightshade and What the Night Brings . Michael and Mark will be interviewed by Phil Williams . The talk and Q&A will be followed by a book signing with both authors. Doors at 6.30pm. Book & Ticket deals include one copy of your selected title to be collected at the event. Please note that both books will be available for purchase on the night from our bookstall, while stocks last. About Nightshade Los Angeles County Sheriff's Detective Stilwell has been "exiled" to a low-key post policing rustic Catalina Island, after department politics drove him off a homicide desk on the mainland. But while following up the usual drunk-and-disorderlies and petty thefts that come with his new territory, Detective Stilwell gets a report of a body found wrapped in plastic and weighed down at the bottom of the harbor. Crossing all lines of protocol and jurisdiction, he starts doggedly working the case. Soon, his investigation uncovers closely guarded secrets and a dark heart to the serene island that was meant to be his escape from the evils of the big city. About What the Night Brings The lies are deadly, the truth unthinkable… Tom Thorne returns in Mark Billingham’s 25th novel, with his most shocking case ever. "Three dead coppers, Tom, maybe four by lunchtime." The targeted murder of four officers is only the first in a series of attacks that leaves police scared, angry and, most disturbingly of all, vengeful. As Tom Thorne and Nicola Tanner dig into the reasons for the violence, a deeper darkness begins to emerge: the possibility that these murders are payback. The price paid for an unspeakable betrayal. To uncover the truth, Thorne will be forced to question everything he stands for. He can trust nobody, and the shocking secrets revealed by one terrible night will fracture his entire world. About the authors MICHAEL CONNELLY is the author of thirty-nine previous novels, among them New York Times bestsellers The Waiting , Resurrection Walk , and Desert Star. His books, which include the Harry Bosch series, the Lincoln Lawyer series, and the Renée Ballard series, have sold more than eighty-nine million copies worldwide. Connelly is a former newspaper reporter who has won numerous awards for his journalism and his novels. He is the executive producer of four television series: Bosch, Bosch: Legacy, The Lincoln Lawyer, and the upcoming Ballard. He spends his time in California and Florida. MARK BILLINGHAM has won numerous awards, being one of only two authors to twice win the Theakston Old Peculier Award for Crime Novel of the Year. Each of his novels has been a Sunday Times bestseller, including all those in his two series, Tom Thorne and Declan Miller. Sleepyhead and Scaredy Cat were made into a hit TV series on Sky 1, and a series based on the novels In the Dark and Time of Death was broadcast on BBC1. Mark lives in north London with his wife and two children. Information Source: Waterstones | eventbrite
