PANEL 4: The Age of the Editorial: Storytellers, Subjects, and the Shaping | Contemporary Calgary

PANEL 4: The Age of the Editorial: Storytellers, Subjects, and the Shaping | Contemporary Calgary

Aug 6, 2025 (UTC-6)
Calgary
Arts
In an era saturated with profiles, podcasts, thinkpieces, and reels, editorial content has become a dominant force in shaping how we understand artists, thinkers, and the work they put into the world. But as the visibility of public art increases, so too does the power of those who narrate it. Journalists, content producers, and curators often act as informal gatekeepers, determining what is remembered, what is amplified, and what fades from view. This panel brings together both storytellers and those who are often the subjects of their stories, artists themselves to unpack the politics and poetics of documentation. What does it mean to be written about, framed, or quoted out of context? How do artists navigate the tension between being visible and being defined? And in a media ecosystem where virality can be mistaken for value, what kinds of stories endure? Together, we’ll explore how editorial storytelling can preserve complexity, resist flattening, and create space for artists to shape their own legacies while also examining where it falls short, and what the future might look like. Moderator: Priya / Contra Speaker 1: Liam Dawe  Speaker 2: Wesley O'Driscoll  Speaker 4: Leechuts  Speaker 5: Stuart Teekasingh Please find out full conference schedule and information on our website: https://yycbump.ca/festival/conference/ Information Source: Beltline Urban Murals Project | eventbrite

CHS Summer Camp Calgary Humane Society Summer Camp is a place where kids connect with animals. Our goal is to provide an opportunity for children to interact and learn about the animals that share our world. An enthusiastic staff of instructors and friendly animals give your child an enriching experience filled with fun activities, crafts and some hands-on animal encounters. As they have fun, campers learn respect, compassion, and how to provide a lifetime of care for animals. Activities are age and developmentally appropriate. For those campers wishing to attend multiple weeks of camp, we have a different theme each week, ensuring diverse experiences. Campers will learn about animal characteristics, behavior and proper pet care as well as meet and pet bunnies, cats, dogs, reptiles, birds, and more! Theme Description: Animal Investigations (Grades 4-6) Ever wonder what the laws are that protect pets? What about other animals? How are all those laws enforced and what happens when they are broken? Find out through this special camp where you will work with the older group, learning about all things protection and enforcement! Campers will try their hand at solving practice cases, learn about forensics and the information animal investigators use when trying to solve a case as well as meet the enforcers of the Animal Protection Act – our very own CHS Peace Officers! This camp will provide an introduction of our judicial system, the chance to see what being an animal investigator looks like and most importantly, how to be an ally in the fight to protect animals. YYC Sparkle Entrepreneur Network: Intimate Networking for Ambitious Women ✨ Ready to grow your business without the awkward elevator pitch or surface-level small talk? Join us for a curated, high-impact networking experience designed for ambitious, heart-led women in their 20s,-50s who are serious about growth — both personally and professionally. This isn’t your average networking event. We’re talking real conversation, real connection, and real community with a small group of women who get it. Whether you’re in your first year or scaling to six figures, this space is for female entrepreneurs who want more than a quick exchange of business cards — they want genuine relationships, support, and ideas they can take action on. What to Expect: • An intentionally curated group of no more than 10 attendees • Guided prompts that spark authentic, empowering conversations • A relaxed, welcoming setting (no pitch circles or spotlight pressure) • A clear takeaway: walk away with new connections, fresh insight, and one aligned action step to support your growth • A vibe that’s equal parts cozy café and CEO roundtable • Giftbags and surprises! Why This is Different: Most networking events are crowded, noisy, and salesy. This is curated and intentional — designed so every woman at the table has space to share, connect, and be seen. You’ll leave feeling energized, encouraged, and excited about the relationships you’ve formed — and how they can support your next steps. Event Details: Date: Monday, August 11th, 2025 Time: 7:00 PM Location: Milpa Host: Ashley Dawn, founder of the YYC Sparkle Entrepreneur Network Capacity: 8-12 seats Attendees are responsible for their own food/drink purchases. Each person must register independently. Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferrable! No-shows will be screened and not be allowed at future events.  A Note From Ashley: Creating space for ambitious women to connect without pressure is at the heart of this event. When women feel safe to be real — that’s where the magic happens. If you’re ready for your next chapter in community, this seat is for you. To protect the integrity of our values, individuals who no-show or do not uphold the expectations will be banned from joining future events. This event is not for those simply looking to pitch a service or push a product. It’s for women who value connection over competition and are willing to show up authentically. Photography & Consent: By attending, you consent to photos or videos being taken and used by Ashley Dawn Coaching Inc. for promotional purposes (social media, website, future events). If you’d prefer to opt out, simply let us know upon arrival. Information Source: Sparkle Entrepreneur Network by Ashley Dawn | eventbrite
