The session will begin with a brief overview of light and colour mixing. This leads on to a discussion of how colour arises through removal of specific wavelengths of light, and both additive and subtractive colour mixing. The students then discover how chemical bonding can lead to colour, and they produce both natural and synthetic dyes. The final part of the workshop pitches the students against a ‘real-life’ analytical chemistry scenario during which they will devise their own experiment using aspects of concentration, pH and colourimetry to solve a colourful problem. Each session offers a unique opportunity to learn or develop creative skills while exploring genuine artworks and objects up close. Throughout the year, the workshops cover a range of exciting topics, such as watercolour painting, clay sculpting, stop motion animation, still life drawing, and more. Children will have the chance to create their own artwork to take home, inspired by the collection at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. These engaging workshops take place on selected Thursdays from 10:30am-12:30pm. The upcoming sessions include watercolour painting on April 20th, clay sculpting on May 18th, stop motion animation on June 15th, and still life drawing on July 20th. Please note that the September session, exploring World War One through original documents, will be held at Wolverhampton City Archives. Admission for each workshop is £7.50 per child, and all children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the session. Suitable for ages 5 to 16, these workshops provide a fantastic opportunity for home educated children to unleash their creativity and develop new skills.
