Suita
Celebration
The Suita Fire Festival (吹田の火祭) is one of Osaka's oldest and most exciting traditional fire festivals, boasting a history of over 1300 years. It is held at Jōkōen-ji Temple in Suita City, a sacred site for Buddhist pilgrimage and local community gatherings. The grand festival's origins trace back to ancient purification rituals intended to ward off evil, pray for health, and welcome good fortune in the coming year. Over time, this ritual evolved into a spectacular sight, with giant wooden dolls and roaring flames intertwined, attracting generations of visitors with its primal energy and spiritual symbolism. The 2026 Suita Fire Festival will be held in mid-February 2026 at Jōkōen-ji Temple in Suita City, Osaka Prefecture. The temple's long, narrow courtyard, surrounded by urban architecture, creates a tense and immersive atmosphere, hence the event's nickname, "The Fire Festival Where There's Nowhere to Escape."

Surrealism, a movement defined by André Breton in 1924, emerged under the influence of Freud's psychoanalysis, which focuses on the unconscious and dreams. Initially it emerged as a literary trend, but its influence gradually spread to a wide range of fields, including visual arts such as objects, paintings, photography, and video, as well as advertising, fashion, and interior design. Surrealism brought about an artistic revolution, and while it also contained political elements, it also spread to scenes closely related to everyday life, approaching society from both political and everyday perspectives. This project aims to deconstruct Surrealism, which has had an overwhelming presence and expanded to visual arts and ultimately society as a whole, using the medium of expression as a keyword, and reconstruct the image of Surrealism.
