Ōnominato Shrine Summer Festival | Kanazawa
Celebration
The Natsumi Festival is a festival dedicated to the two gods enshrined at Onominato Shrine, Amaterasu and Sarutahiko-Okami. The exact origins of the festival are unclear, but it is believed to have been held as early as the middle of the Kan'ei period (1624-1645). The first day of the festival is a procession in which the portable shrines (called mikoshi) enshrining the two gods are carried from Onominato Shrine to the "old site" in Kanai-cho. The return procession is held on the last day of the festival. In addition, traditional dances, rituals and competitions are held. This parade is the largest in Kanazawa City, and the entire festival has been designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Heritage of Kanazawa City.
