Hida
Celebration
The Foxlight Festival originates from the ancient Japanese folklore of "foxlight" ("foxfire" in English), an eerie light that sometimes appears at night. The foxlight folklore is often compared to the will-o'-the-wisp folklore of European cultures; however, in Japan, foxlights are believed to be the torches of fox processions. During this festival, a fox wedding procession solemnly parades through town, ultimately leading the bride and groom (a real couple selected from applicants nationwide) to the ceremony venue.
