Completed in 1872, the James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home remains one of the finest preservations in the U.S. of a Victorian, Italianate home. Owned by the Nickum and Holstein families, Mr. Riley lived there as a guest from 1893 until his death in 1916. The Museum Home opened to the public six years later, and the support of generous donors allowed its caretakers to carefully preserve the original décor, furniture, art and architecture of this rare, historic space. Our goal is to explore all the trails of the park including those that are not accessible through the 56th or 71st St gate entrances. Therefore, we meet across the street from the park’s 56th St entrance at the Mayor’s Garden on the southeast corner of 56th and Reed Rd next to the Colt’s Complex. We will meet there at 9am, stretch, sign in, and choose the trail we’ll walk for the day. We will then drive to the trail. Walks will be canceled with steady rain to avoid risk of injury while hiking. We will send alerts no later than 1 hour before hiking time. Safety First!
