During the session, participants will learn the thumb draw technique with archery thumb rings, using traditionally shaped bows and bamboo arrows. The WOMEN, ART, FREEDOM Symposium is a day-conference that focuses on the vital role of the arts in the movement for women's rights in Iran. This symposium, organized by renowned art historian Katayoun Shahandeh and sound artist Fari Bradley, will bring together esteemed women academics and artists of Iranian origin to discuss the significant contributions made by visual and performing arts to the women's rights movement in Iran. During the symposium, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from distinguished speakers such as Sepy Baghaei, a Theatre Director, Dr Kristin Soraya Batmanghelichi from the University of Oslo, Dr Evaleila Pesaran from the University of Cambridge, and Mitra Tabrizian, an Artist/Filmmaker. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr Layla Diba, an esteemed Art Historian and Curator. For those unable to attend in person, the event will be live-streamed, ensuring that everyone has the chance to benefit from the valuable insights shared by the speakers. By showcasing literary and historical heroines from Persian painting and referencing figures such as the Achaeminid Queen Atossa and storyteller Shahrzad, Dr Diba will explore the profound impact of women in public life throughout history. Additionally, Dr Diba will discuss the absence of women artists in Iran until the 20th century and analyze the significance of women as subjects of the male gaze in both pre-modern and contemporary art.
