Author and cartoonist Navied Mahdavian will be joining The King's English Bookshop in Salt Lake City on September 25, 2023, to discuss and sign his latest work, This Country. As a contributing cartoonist at the New Yorker since 2018, Mahdavian's talent has also been recognized in publications such as Reader's Digest, Wired, and Alta Online, as well as in the books The Rejection Collection and Send Help! Before pursuing his career as a cartoonist, Mahdavian taught fifth grade, where he honed his comedic skills.
This in-person event offers the opportunity to meet Mahdavian and gain insight into his artistic journey. In This Country, Navied Mahdavian shares his personal story of moving from San Francisco to an off-the-grid cabin in rural Idaho in pursuit of his dreams. He also explores themes of culture, environment, and identity, while bravely addressing moments of racism and brutality that he encountered as a Middle Eastern American in rural America.
