Join the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach to celebrate the opening of their newest exhibit, "BOMBER JACKETS | The Painted Art of World War II". This exhibition showcases the iconic hand-painted Bomber Jackets, also known as the Type A-2 Flying Jacket, which are revered artifacts from World War II. Originally designed as protective clothing for aircrews, these jackets quickly became a symbol of status, allowing individuals to express their creativity amidst a sea of green uniforms and to document acts of bravery and courage during wartime.
Photographer John Slemp has meticulously cataloged the surviving jackets, traveling across the country to museums and private collections. This exhibition marks the first time these remarkable pieces will be displayed together in a museum setting, providing visitors with an immersive experience. The opening on November 18th, 2023, will include a member preview with light refreshments, followed by general access for all guests. The ribbon cutting ceremony will feature remarks from the exhibition development team, and attendees will have the opportunity to witness a live artist, Chad Hill, painting on a reproduction A-2 Jacket.
Throughout the day, there will be various activities, including a live jacket painting demonstration by Chad Hill, known for his work on WWII Warbirds, and children's art tables where young visitors can design their own jackets. In addition, John Slemp will be hosting a photography workshop, offering insights into capturing the beauty of these painted jackets. The day will conclude with a presentation by John Slemp, delving into the process of cataloging the jackets and sharing the stories of their wartime owners.
Don't miss this extraordinary opportunity to witness the art and history of Bomber Jackets from World War II. Admission to the exhibition is included with the museum ticket, and John Slemp's book, "Bomber Boys: WWII Flight Jacket Art", will be available for purchase in the museum gift shop. Reserve your space for the photography workshop in advance as spots are limited. Join us in Virginia Beach on November 18th, 2023, for this unforgettable experience.
