Whether you're a seasoned drummer or just starting out, Rumen welcomes drummers of all ages and backgrounds to attend. Beginners will have the opportunity to learn basic techniques and rhythmic patterns, while more advanced students can challenge themselves with syncopations, fills, ornaments, and improvisation. Rumen's expertise extends beyond drumming as he will also introduce dance steps and songs related to the presented rhythms, providing valuable cultural context.
Don't worry if you don't have your own instruments—tupans/davuls and dumbek/darabukas can be provided or purchased upon request. While attending the full four-workshop series is encouraged, drop-in/single class participants are welcome as each class will cover new material.
About Rumen Sali Shopov, a master Turkish-Romani drummer, drum maker, and multi-instrumentalist, hailing from the crossroads town of Gotse Delchev in Bulgaria's Pirin Mountain region. Rumen's passion for music began at an early age, and he quickly established himself as a professional drummer, tambura player, and bandleader. Since relocating to California in 2002, Rumen has performed with a diverse range of artists and ensembles, becoming a prominent figure in the Balkan music scene.
