She Jumps and Kingdom East Afterschool Programs (KEAP) are excited to offer a Junior Ski Patrol event at Burke Mountain! This SheJumps Wild Skills event is structured as a full-day camp experience intended for intermediate to expert skiers/snowboarders between grades 3-8. We welcome all women and girls-transgender and cisgender, as well as non-binary people to participate in this event. Event Registration includes lift tickets, lunch and snacks. Program SummarySheJumps' Junior Ski Patrol seeks to mentor young girls in mountain safety and first aid while working with the strong women of the ski patrol community. At the Burke Mountain event, girls will be introduced to ski patrol through workshops on first aid, weather, toboggans, etc. This event will encourage girls to learn new skills, take on challenges and think creatively which develops perseverance and fosters confidence. Our goal is to see girls learning, having fun and connecting in an encouraging environment with amazing instruction and support from female mentors. We want Wild Skills to be an experience they will remember, one that will spark a lifetime of passion for the outdoors and will remind them that they are capable of anything. Skier/Boarder Ability Level: This event is intended for intermediate to expert skiers & snowboarders. As part of the registration process, you will be asked a variety of questions about how confident the skier/rider is on particular runs atBurke Mountain to help us determine which team they are best suited for. Cost: This event costs $40, although scholarships are available. All participants that don't have a season pass can be given a lift ticket for the day. Please note that preregistration is required as space is limited! Schedule for the Day*On the day of the event, you’ll check in at registration which will be open from 8:45am -9:15am. The day begins and ends at the Sherburne Base Lodge. Families should park in the Sherburne lot and students should be checked in at the lodge. Once checked in, girls must stay with their chaperones until they are checked out by a parent at the end of the event. At registration you will meet up with your team for the day. The teams will consist of 1 ski patroller, 2-3 SheJumps volunteers, and 8 participants of similar ski ability. At 9:30am we will start the day with an all teams morning meeting covering ski patrol basics, weather, and our agenda for the day. From there teams will break out and proceed to their various stations throughout the mountain. Stations cover topics including first aid, mountain safety, toboggan use. Along the way there is free skiing, surprises and games, of course! The afternoon will continue with an additional station and free ski. Pickup details: The day begins and ends at the Sherburne Base Lodge. Facilitated by Duldig's sculptor-in-residence, Stefan Damschke, this class lets you roll up your sleeves and engage with Duldig Studio in a new way, by getting hands-on experience while learning about sculpture from a creative practitioner. Let your creativity flow as you master how to mould and shape your clay into unique pieces to take home. Learn techniques in this hand-building sculpture workshop designed for adults and feel inspired by the surrounding work of the Duldig Studio Ceramic collection. This is a flexible workshop suitable for beginners looking to build a foundation as well as more experienced sculptors wishing to develop their techniques. Learn about key concepts including balance and structure which will be indispensable for your further sculptural journey. Stefan Damschke worked with Karl Duldig, as student and then as his assistant from 1976-86, and has been curator and sculpture teacher at Duldig Studio since 1999. He studied a Bachelor of Arts (Ceramic Design) at Monash University, and Bachelor of Arts (Literary Studies & Philosophy/History of Ideas) Deakin University. Yellow-throated Warbler, Matt Felperin Join us on Sunday afternoon for our quarterly live Audubon Afternoon at the National Wildlife Federation, 11100 Wildlife Center Drive in Reston. We’ll gather informally starting at 2:30 pm so you have an opportunity to reconnect with everyone. We welcome any food and drink you would like to share with everyone during the informal portion of the program. At 3:00 pm, our Board President will present our revised bylaws for member approval. Our formal program will begin at 3:15pm, when guest speaker Matt Felperin will give us a Warbler Bootcamp in preparation for spring migration. He will also speak about Birdathon, our Spring fundraiser, and how to get your team set up. All are welcome to attend, participation in Birdathon is encouraged but not required. After the talk, from 4:00 - 4:30 pm, stick around to speak with board members and staff about how you can get more involved! Volunteers are needed for a new bird strike monitoring program, spring outreach tabling, purple martin monitoring, invasive removal and more. More about our speaker: Matt Felperin is a DC area local, raised in Takoma Park, MD. He is the Roving Naturalist with NOVA Parks, the regional park system of Northern Virginia. Matt has always been drawn to nature, and has been sharing his findings with anyone within earshot since his days as a small child looking for salamanders and crayfish in nearby Sligo Creek. He truly treasures the Chesapeake Bay and has enjoyed field work and naturalist programs in several types of habitat within the Chesapeake Watershed, and credits working under naturalist Greg Kearns for truly sparking his love of birds. As the NOVA Parks Roving Naturalist, Matt leads environmental education and recreation programs such as bird walks and kayak tours for the public. He views his wildlife photography work as one of the most useful tools to connect people with nature. Open to the general public, all are welcome!
