HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. Writers Bloc presents a celebration of fiction from The New Yorker: its first 100 years. With fiction editor Deborah Treisman and George Saunders, and readings by actors. For 100 years, we have turned to The New Yorker for deep investigative reporting, broad profiles of those in politics and culture here and abroad, indisputably the best cartoons on the planet, humor, arts criticism, and more. It simply set the standard for excellence. For 100 years, its fiction has been a touchstone in the field of international letters. In celebration of the magazine’s 100th year, The New Yorker has published a huge trove of short stories that graced its pages, often launching the careers of some of the superb novelists and short story writers of our time, and of another, earlier time. Isaac Bashevis Singer. Shirley Jackson. Annie Proulx. J.D. Salinger. Saul Bellow. Philip Roth. And so many more, including George Saunders, and stories published recently. How to choose the lucky stories that made the cut? Deborah Treisman, the fiction editor of The New Yorker, edited the glorious new book, A Century of Fiction in The New Yorker: 1925-2025. She and novelist George Saunders discuss the magazine’s stories and the selection process. Actors will read a few selections from this beautiful book. Actors to be announced. Limited parking onsite. We recommend rideshares and carpooling. Please allow time to find parking. Did you know that you can make a fully tax-deductible donation? As a nonprofit organization, Writers Bloc Presents relies on support from people like you. Help us to remain a strong community as we continue to celebrate literature by authors we love, and explore critical contemporary issues. Please donate here. No refunds or exchanges on tickets or books. Books must be picked up on the night of the program. Information Source: Writers Bloc Presents | eventbrite

HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. While it would be so interesting and fun to be the child of the wildly famous and groundbreaking author and literary lion, Erica Jong, it presented some painfully difficult challenges to Molly Jong-Fast, Erica's daughter. Jong-Fast has her family's great creative DNA, being a brilliant writer herself, who is now focusing on political writing and podcasting. But her new book, How to Lose Your Mother, is deeply and utterly personal. It is impossible to put down. Molly Jong-Fast reveals the struggle with her internationally renowned mother's dementia, while dealing with her own husband's cancer diagnosis at the same time. How can this be funny and unique? Trust us. Jong-Fast knows how to tell a tough story with searing honesty and stunning humor , weaving in the complications and struggles of being Erica Jong's daughter. The ravages of memory loss and ageing are cruel facts of life. But in Molly Jong-Fast's hands, they're something new altogether. Moderator TBA. Limited parking onsite. We recommend rideshares and carpooling. Please allow time to find parking. Did you know that you can make a fully tax-deductible donation? HEALTH & SAFETY: WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE WEAR A FACE MASK WHILE INDOORS FOR OUR EVENTS. THANK YOU. You've seen Larry Charles' name all over film and TV credits for decades. He's a writer, producer, and director on some of the most beloved shows on TV. He was in the writers' room from the beginning of Seinfeld, and stayed for years. He subsequently developed Mad About You into one of the more popular sitcoms of the era, and was executive producer of the wildly popular biting comedy/drama series, Entourage. And he produced and directed dozens of episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Larry strayed into movies, directing the outrageous satires, Bruno, Borat, and The Dictator, and so many others. In his new book, Comedy Samurai, Larry Charles goes a lot deeper than telling us stories about his singular experiences with iconic figures in American comedy. He gives us example after example of great sketches, and how they came to be. They're not only really funny, but they define singular eras of pop culture in America. And he doesn't hide the darker side of TV comedy--the drugs and addiction to the certainty of uncertain futures. Great and cautionary tales abound in Comedy Samurai, told by one of the true comedy warriors of our age. In conversation with actor/writer Luke Wilson. You know Luke Wilson from modern film classics such as Wes Anderson's Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, and The Royal Tenenbaums, in addition to such mega hits as Legally Blonde, Anchorman, and Blades of Glory. He also appeared in Masked and Anonymous, which was written by Larry Charles and Bob Dylan. His innumerable tv credits include No Good Deed, Enlightened, and so many more. Luke is also a writer and a director. Limited parking onsite. We recommend rideshares and carpooling. Please allow time to find parking.
