2023 Hiking Adventures | Indiana Dunes State Park
Sports & Fitness
2023 Hiking Adventures presents an exciting opportunity for nature lovers to embark on a thrilling adventure in Chesterton. This event will take place at the picturesque Indiana Dunes State Park, located at 1600 North 25 East, Chesterton, IN 46304. It is important to note that this event will be held at the State Park and not the National Park.
Participants will have the chance to explore the beauty of nature, escape the confines of their daily routine, and experience the positive vibes that come with spending time in the great outdoors. The hike meetup is scheduled for Sunday, October 8, and attendees are advised to arrive 10-15 minutes early to ensure a prompt start.
To make the most of this adventure, it is recommended to come prepared with closed-toe hiking shoes or comfortable walking shoes that provide ample support. It's worth mentioning that fashion shoes or boots are not allowed, as we will be traversing sandy trails, inevitably getting sand in our socks and shoes. Dressing in multiple layers, including a long-sleeved shirt and long pants, is advised to protect the skin, even during the summer months.
As we hike through the trails, shaded by beautiful trees, it is essential to have a backpack to carry water, snacks, and any other necessary items. Light gloves, ear covers, and a rain poncho or umbrella are recommended for cooler or rainy days. Additionally, a bandana or hat along with sunglasses will provide protection from falling leaves, bugs, and the sun.
The hike will cover a distance of approximately 5-10+ miles, lasting around 4 hours, allowing participants to take in the unique features of each trail, capture breathtaking photos, and learn more about the surrounding nature. The group will maintain a relaxed pace, accommodating varying walking speeds. Throughout the hike, there will be instructor-led activities and challenges to add an extra element of fun.
Snack and bathroom breaks will be provided at different intervals, ensuring participants are well-nourished and comfortable during the journey. However, it is also encouraged to bring your own snacks. Outhouses stocked with tissue and hand sanitizer are available along the trail, although they may be limited in number.
After the hike, participants are invited to join an instructor-led cool-down and stretching session to help the body recover. It is recommended to continue stretching at home and consider taking a hot Epsom salt bath to release any muscle tension. Alternating between hot and cold showers can also be beneficial for up to three days after the hike.
