The Hive: A 10-Storey Timber Braced Frame with Seismic Dampers | Danish Canadian Club

Presentation description Title: “The Hive: A 10-Storey Timber Braced Frame with Seismic Dampers” Description: "The Hive is a 10-Storey timber office building in Vancouver, British Columbia. The structural lateral system comprises timber braced frames around the perimeter and four internal CLT shearwalls. Both the shearwalls and the braces frames are coupled with Tectonus seismic dampers, to dissipate energy during a seismic event. The project design was completed using non-linear time history analysis, and a robust peer review process. The building is currently regarded as one of the most seismically advanced timber structures in the world. Its pioneering approach of a central pin rocking shearwall concept, coupled with self-centring Tectonus dampers at each end, allows the building to be self-centring with no damage to the compression toe, a strong alternative to post-tensioned rocking shearwalls. The project is currently in construction with completion slated for late 2025. The superstructure is completed. The presentation will focus on the design and rationale of the seismic system, the structural testing of gravity connections for drift comparability, and the many lessons learned. Construction and fabrication highlights will also be shared, with a focus on tolerances. Speaker - Robert Jackson Robert Jackson is a Partner and structural engineer at Fast + Epp, based out of Vancouver. He is recognized for his creativity, collaborative approach, and pioneering work in mass timber hybrid structures. Over his career, Robert has become an industry leader in mass timber construction and has led many of Fast + Epp’s most notable and ambitious projects, including the TallWood House at Brock Commons, Limberlost Place, The Hive, and the PNE Amphitheater. Robert has received several awards for his contributions to the profession, including the IStructE Young Structural Engineering Professional Award, SEABC Young Member Meritorious Achievement Award, and was recently named Top 40 Under 40 in Canadian Construction. He is a frequent lecturer, and a contributing author on several publications relating to timber research and development and is passionate about sharing his knowledge and lessons learned with the design community.
