Miserere ~ Music for Lent This is our favourite season of music, and we have a particularly enriching programme for you this year. Join us for... ~ Miserere - Allegri ~ O Vos Omes - Gesualdo ~ Miserere - MacMillan ~ Tristis est Anima Mea - Poulenc ~ Songs of Farewell - Parry Allegri's Miserere is surely among the most (justifiably) famous pieces of choral music. Its simplicity and elegant beauty is brought starkly to life in this arrangement by Ben Byram Wigfield, which tracks the evolution of the piece through the centuries. It is complimented by James MacMillan's setting of the same words, which is no less beautiful, and contrasted with a short motet by Allegri's contemporary, the murderously insane Carlo Gesualdo. Tristis est Anima Mea by 19th-century French composer Francis Poulenc is uncomfortably close in musical language to Gesualdo...! And finally Parry's Songs of Farewell - a heart-rending lament to the tragedy of the First World War, in which countless lives were pointlessly lost and maimed, including his friends Butterworth (killed), Bliss (wounded), Gurney (gassed). Parry felt the tragedy of the War very personally, yet while these six songs undoubtedly reflect that pain, there remains always a glimmer of hope. Join us on this journey of musical reflection on the beauty and pain, tragedy and triumph of human existence. A unique blend of vintage photography and storytelling is set to captivate audiences. The show, titled “Dad, Playboy, & Me...Not Your Average Slideshow,” offers a comedic and heartfelt journey into the past, featuring rare photographs taken by the late Christopher “Kit” Norton during the 1970s at the Playboy Club in New Jersey. Norton, an avid photographer born in 1942 in Paterson, NJ, had a passion for capturing images of women, race cars, sailboats, and family moments. His daughter, A.G. Norton, discovered over 600 of his original 35mm photographs hidden away in a basement years after they were taken. This discovery led her to create an interactive comedic slideshow that has since toured internationally, receiving glowing critical reviews. The performance not only showcases the glamour and service of the era but also delves into personal narratives, connecting the past with the present. Audiences are invited to engage with the stories behind the images, offering a nostalgic yet fresh perspective on a bygone time. “Dad, Playboy, & Me...Not Your Average Slideshow” also highlights the connection between Norton’s own family photographic legacy and the lesbian photographer Berenice Abbott. Abbott, initially an understudy of Man Ray in Paris in the 1920s went on to take some of the most iconic portraits of the time including those of Lucia, Nora, and James Joyce.
