Oxford
Step into the shadows of history and embark on an uncomfortable ghost tour as we learn about the events that have sparked the many eerie tales of hauntings in Oxford. This tour was researched and designed by two historians who study the history of hauntings and ghost stories, and it examines how hauntings live on through oral histories and social disquiet.
Our Haunted Oxford tour delves into the real stories behind the supernatural, revealing the unsettling moments from the past that sparked their telling. Throughout this walk, you will discuss the underlying social frictions that fuel ghost stories, and examine why we are so fascinated by dark histories.
This unique ghost tour examines haunting through the echoes of gender disparities, oppression, violence, social division, and the powerful grip of memory.

Museum of Oxford Walks: Rash or Rational? Victorian Leisure & Entertainment | Museum of Oxford
Jul 30, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
Explore the Oxford of the Victorian age and find out
what Victorian Oxford did for fun
on this unique 90-minute circular walking tour visiting the sites of historic entertainment venues in the city centre.
Led by local historian Liz Woolley, this city walking tour will introduce you to a different side of Oxford’s urban history. See the 'city of dreaming spires’ from the perspective of ordinary townspeople, who found themselves with leisure time – and the money to spend on it – for the first time.
You will learn about both the rash and the rational sides of Victorian entertainment, visiting sites including the
Pembroke Street Public Baths
, where you could be attended by a “first-class shampooer and teacher of swimming”, and the
YMCA on George Street
which promised to guide young men away from the “temptations of city life”.
As part of the tour, you will see: The Town Hall and Public Library, the Wilberforce Temperance hotel (where alcohol was banned), The Jolly Farmers Pub, the New Theatre – plus more historic Oxford locations!
Join our Rash or Rational? Victorian Leisure and Entertainment Walk to see Oxford through the eyes of an expert and discover a different side to this famous city’s history.
Please note that this tour was previously run under the name 'Leisure and Entertainment in Victorian and Edwardian Oxford'.
Accessibility and further information
Meeting point: Museum of Oxford shop (located inside the Oxford Town Hall). Please arrive 5 minutes before the start of the walk and check in at the Museum Shop with our friendly front of house team.
The walk lasts 1.5 hours.
The itinerary includes cobbled streets, uneven surfaces and narrow pavements. One of the stops involves going through Whatsheaf Yard which is very narrow and has an uneven surface. An alternative route to the next stop is available through St Aldate’s. Please email
museum@oxford.gov.uk
if you would like to discuss any access requirements ahead of booking a walk.
Please note that this walk is recommended for ages 16+.
Tickets cost £15 and are available to purchase online (booking fee applies) or at the Museum shop.
Meet your tour guide: Liz Woolley
Liz Woolley
is a local historian specialising in the history of Oxford’s ‘town’ – as opposed to ‘gown’ – and of the everyday lives of ordinary working people, chiefly during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Liz has lived in Oxford for forty years and has an MSc in English Local History from the University’s Department for Continuing Education. She is an experienced tour guide, speaker, tutor, researcher and writer, who enjoys helping people discover the perhaps less well-known history of Oxford and its citizens.

Tales Of The Thames: Uncovering Stories with Arts & Citizen Science | The Community Works
Aug 30, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
Pollution in the River Thames has reached unprecedented levels in recent years, leaving many communities along its banks feeling outraged, powerless, and grieving the loss of a cherished natural space. Tales Of The Thames invites you to come together in response — to share, reflect, and begin to imagine new ways forward through art and citizen science.
The art portion of this workshop is led by Anya Gleizer and offers a creative space for processing ecological grief, reconnecting with the more-than-human world, and beginning conversations that matter. Through storytelling and collaborative embroidery, participants will contribute to the Tamesis Robe — a growing piece of communal textile art featuring a to-scale, 15-metre-long map of the Thames watershed. As the robe travels to communities along the river, it gathers new stories, threads, and perspectives.
The event will also include a citizen science taster session in collaboration with Thames21, offering an introduction to how local residents can play an active role in monitoring and protecting Oxford’s rivers and streams. It will provide a hands-on opportunity to explore the tools and approaches used in community-led water health monitoring.
This event is part of Makespace Oxfordshire’s Common Futures programme, a series of public workshops and events designed to foster connection, creativity, and collective imagining ahead of the opening of our new civic space on George Street.
We will meet at The Community Works but some of the session will be spent outside. The Community Works has an accessible bathroom and level access at the rear of the building. Let us know if you will need this and we will direct you.
